Normally I take these magazine rankings with a huge grain of salt, but it is nice for us to get some positive recognition (aside from being Marie Claire's new "sexiest city," of course):

Yep, good to see Milwaukee on a list like this always.

PR / perception is the name of the game always...so even if this list doesn't mean much in reality, the perception on lists like this helps mold reality.

Milwaukee joined Minneapolis and Chicago in the top 10, well representing the Upper Midwest on the list.

Surprising to me from the article (which was pretty much all of it) despite my affection for Milwaukee:

>>>>>"It has the fifth-highest concentration of top companies in the country, by our count."

-Whaaaa? That doesn't seem to add up to me. I know we have, what, 7 Fortune 500 firms...and I do think organizations like Manpower are big for MKE, but I don't quite get this stat.

>>>>>"salaries paid to professionals are comfortably above the national average"

-Now that is a surprise to me too. I know cost of living is moderately good in Milwaukee, and I don't think salaries are "bad" here, but I am surprised that we'd be above the national average. I would've thought average.

>>>>>" Sweetening the deal further, the city is in the top quartile for its population of never-married citizens between 20 and 35.

I work Downtown. While I am happily married, as a young 30s male with still eyes, I will attest to a lot of attractive single females in the city, especially for a city of its size.

I am very surprised that they claim our salaries are at the level they claim in the article. From personal experience, that is not the case. I know many people that have taken jobs elsewhere because the pay was much higher than in Milwaukee. In addition, I have also met people that have graduated from UWM,Marquette and MSOE that have taken jobs out of state because the starting salaries were higher. That is one of the primary reasons why Milwaukee based companies sometimes have a hard time recruiting talent to come here.

These rankings seem a little sketchy.

MKE is a good city, but the local economy and job market aren't exactly strong points.
