My husband and I will relocate to Wisconsin this September, his office is located at Oak Creek, we plan to rent a place to live.

We want to live at an area no more than 20 to 30 mins driving to oak creek, close to everything, safe and quiet.

Combining our conditions above and some research I did on internet, we conclude two areas that might fulfill our needs:

1.Intersection of S. Howell Ave. and E. Puetz Rd. at Oak Creek. This area seems to have many choices of management property, close to shops, restaurants, parks... but I am not sure the public security around there and it seems close to railway and airport that might have a lot of noise when trains or planes pass through every time, will it be a problem?

2.S. Main St. from 2nd st. to 14th st. at Racine downtown, it seems to have nice view there. However, some people said Racine is full of ghetto, if that is true, how serious is it? Is S. Main St. from 2nd st. to 14th st. free from ghetto?

We really need more advices to make a good decision, please help us, thank you!

Racine has areas that are nice, but it has nasty areas as well. I'm not an expert on it, but I've been there enough times to recognize what's what.

As far as Howell and Puetz Rd, it is about two miles directly off the departure end of runway 19R at Mitchell Int'l airport. That is also the "preferred" takeoff runway between 10pm and 6am. There will be some jet noise in that area.

Why those two locations? You could get so many options / varieties in such great places that fit your criteria well.

Try places like Greendale, alternate locations in Oak Creek, the Bay View area of Milwaukee, Franklin, Greenfield, etc.

I live in Oak Creek so I should be able to answer some questions about the area. Personally, I think that it is a great city. There is so much being built right now, most of it on Howell. The area you picked is right in the middle of everything.

Do you have/plan on having kids? The Oak Creek school system is great. I went to private school until 6th grade. The I transferred to OC public schools. I didn't regret that once. The high school is one of the largest in Milwaukee County and it offers a variety of classes. If they don't have it, they send you to college and pay for it. The only complaint I've really heard about the school was that they take sports too seriously, which I don't see being a problem at all. They usually have some of the best athletic programs in the state, but many of those athletes are great students as well. So schools should be no problem.

Oak Creek is a very safe city. It's growing pretty fast so there are some better and some worse areas. The areas where things happen are very constricted. Almost all fires happen in these two areas. There is an apartment complex on Howell and Drexal. It's fairly run down once you get inside and has some lower income families. The PD and FD are there often, as well as SWAT a few times. The other area is "Carrolville" on 5th Ave near the lake. The rest of the city is very safe with many newer subdivisions.

Like someone else stated, the airport is down Howell in Milwaukee, but I really wouldn't notice any problems with noise in the area that you were looking at.

I don't know too much about Racine. There are some "ghetto" areas in the city. They are a small city with big city problems. However, there are still plenty of nice areas. I'm in the their process right now to become a firefighter for Racine. Their 6 fire stations can be compared to the busiest 6 stations in Milwaukee. There is a lot going on there.

A big problem with Racine is the fact that you aren't as close to Milwaukee.

I have heard the same about Racine, and actually since we are relocating also, it is an area we have choosen not to live. Specifically we were told it is the go between from Chicago and Milwaukee with the gangs. Do some specific research, look up crime in the different areas. There are other areas that are much nicer, at least that is what we have found.
