Default Commuting/traffic in Milwaukee...help?

We are relocating to MKE soon and would love some input on commuting/traffic from specific areas.

We will both be working right on the border of West Allis/W. MKE on 59.

We are considering buying either in Mukwonago or Oconomowoc. What could we expect coming north on 43 from Mukwonago and coming east on 94 from Oconomowoc? How do the winters affect each?

My husband is presently in DC and I am in Houston, so we are used to traffic. However, we'd like to know what to expect, summer and winter, from those two different places and compare commutes.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

20 or 30 minutes from Mukwanago, 30 or 40 minutes from Oconomowoc.

Winters won't affect the commute too much. When there's a major snowfall traffic will be slowed considerably during the actual snow event. Most of the time the freeways are cleared of snow within 12 hours of the snow event.

Milwaukee traffic is nowhere near comparable to The District or Houston. You'd be amazed how roads get cleared pretty quickly in the snow, in winter, compared to the one snow flake D.C. shut down.

You really won't have problems commuting to Mukwonago or Oconomowoc from West Allis. I can't stress to you enough how much easier your commute life will be compared to those two cities.

Summer=road construction/pothole season in Milwaukee...sort of kidding sort of not. There is truth to that joke.

Traffic/commuting won't be your biggest adjustment to Milwaukee from those two places. It will be much better than your previous stops I'm sure, especially if you drove in D.C. as opposed to the Metro, and especially if you were driving outside of the inner loop in Houston.

Having lived in DC, I'll tell you that you will find nothing like DC traffic anywhere in Milwaukee. The commute you are considering will not have much congestion.

It's good to know that traffic is not as bad as expected. We have been looking in Slinger, commuting to New Berlin to work. Our agent is trying to discourage us from purchasing a home further out because she said it is awful in the winter. But I noticed she never turns left out onto a street, only right and does the U turn thing. It cracks me up, but I realized she is a nervous driver. So to find that the driving situation is not as bad puts me at ease.....lol
