I will be flying Airtran Airways from San Diego into Milwaukee arriving at 5:20pm this upcoming Saturday and then try head straight to Chicago from the airport utilizing Amtrak’s Hiawatha service with the train departing MKE at 5:55pm from MKE to Chicago's Union Station. I will not check bags from SAN-MKE so is it feasible with 35 minutes in-between my arrival into MKE and my departure from MKE to CHI via the Amtrak station that I will be able to make this connection and board the train in-time? Should I buy my Amtrak ticket in advance for the ride to Chicago? I'm in shape so I can run If possible to make the train connection. Your help is greatly appreciated in assisting me with this matter...THANKS

There is a free shuttle bus that leaves from Door 4 of the airport but I don't know if it has scheduled times or leaves on demand. Walking there is not really easy and probably not an option. AFAIK, there are no direct pedestrian paths to the train station. Looking at Google Maps confirms this. It sounds like a tight schedule unless you can get the shuttle immediately to take you there. Of course you could also take a taxi if speed is an issue.

That's cutting it really close, and I have a feeling you won't make it. To repeat Nuclear's advice: In order to get from the airport to the nearby Amtrak station, you'll have to take a shuttle, so you should check on shuttle times to see if a shuttle may be leaving at just the right time for you. Maybe if you run and take a taxi to the Amtrak stop, you can make it, though. However, things rarely work that way, and my guess is you'll need a few more minutes to make the connection. If you're lucky, the plane will land ahead of schedule, and the train will be a little late. Best of luck to you....

Thanks for the advice guys! I will definately buy the Amtrak ticket in advance and attempt to take a quick cab to the Amtrak station to make the train connection. Usually planes flying from the West Coast arrive a little earlier into the East with the tail wind so hopefully we have a on-time depature .

Amtrack is ALWAYS running late. Don't sweat it.

General Mitchel is only a short hop, skip and jump from the Downtown area. You should check with the Airport as to the better option and do keep in mind that a Cab ride would be an option. It's kind of rough now knowing what you are going to do but just have a plan and a back-up.
