Anyone live in SE. WI and cover sales area in CHI?
"Tinkering" with a move into SE WI. Want a less congested, less expensive place to live. Need to be able to get into Chicago area for sales calls, otherwise work from home. Need good schools for the kids.
Place on a lake would be a bonus, but doubt I could afford Lake Geneva. Wife likes small towns. I like being able to leave my driveway and have safe bicycling opportunities. Grandparents had a resort (sold in early 70's) just north of Kansasville on Eagle Lake. Nice area, town might be too small & not sure how good schools are.
Paddock Lake, Salem, Union Grove worth considering? Thanks for the suggestions.

"Less expensive" and "on a lake" are mutually exclusive. Even on a lake that is not tourist-y like Lake Geneva, expect to spend at least 400 grand on a cottage, and probably one that will need updating.

Well, I had a hunch but didn't want to assume. How about off a lake with beach access or walking distance to public beach? Cottage won't do, looking for it to be primary residence.

You can find cheap lakefront property on some of the smaller "puddle lakes" in Wisconsin, but anything large enough to run a speedboat around has been pretty well discovered by tourists with more money than the locals.
I've got my eye on a really awseome lesser-known lake for a future second home, but I'm not going to publicize it here. Sorry!

By the way, I've run into more than one architectural product rep who lives in SE Wisco and covers Chicagoland, and they seem to manage.

My territory covers all of Wisconsin and the northern half of Illinois. My HQ is here in Milwaukee. I find that trips to Chicago normally require an overnight to be effective. If I run down for an out & back, I have to leave at 5AM to avoid the killer traffic, then I want to be on the road back by 2 PM or you are stuck in the traffic again... It has taken me as long as 5 hours to get back to Milwaukee from down town Chicago... Trains may help if your schedule is flexible, but the last time I tried that it didn't work out. You have to drive almost into Chicago before the timetables work out for me... Plus, I haul too much gear... Get caught down there for an overnight in the city is going to cost you too... $200 minimum for a nap...

I have had accounts in Chicago/Milwaukee/Madison for years based in Gurnee. In SE wisconsin I would stay close to 94... Just west of Kenosha is Paddock Lake off HWY 50. Check that out----its on a lake with small town charm!

Sounds like you want Waukesha County, Oconomowoc, Delafield, Hartland areas, there are over twenty lakes within a 10 mile distance of Oconomowoc, most have some type of lake access. I can tell you from moving here 30 years ago from the south side that you will never look back. The quality of life is so good you will feel like you are on vacation, I did, and the feeling lasted for years.
Send me a private message if you feel like you want more information on the area, I would be glad to help you out.
