Good Apartments/Landlords - Lower East Side
Hello--
I'm a recently college graduate from UW-Madison and got a job in the Greater Milwaukee Area.
I'm looking for a similarly hip, young, and walkable area of Milwaukee. Browsing the forums, it seems like the lower-east side is where I want to be (specifically Prospect & Brady or some radius thereof)
Are there any apartments/landlords that people have had a particularly good or bad experience with?
I'm also worried about crime. Is the lower-east side at the point that I could walk home from a bar late at night and not get mugged?
Are there any safer walking-friendly suburbs of Milwaukee that a recent college grad wouldn't find mind-numbingly boring?
Thanks!

Are you just a little tipsy or staggering in the street barely able to walk drunk?

It was meant more to be a situation of time-of-day than my level of drunkenness.

Don't worry about it. Yes, the Brady St. area is fine to walk home at night, even stumbling drunk, I've done it many times myself. You just have to try to stay aware & you'll be fine. Plus, there's always people around late at night, there's still restaurants, bars, Walgreen's, etc. open so it's not like it'll be completely dark & bare. I lived in an apartment complex right on the corner of Brady & Prospect, now I've totally forgotten the address. I think it was like 1729. Anyway, it's on the east side of Prospect & directly north of the walkway that leads to the Brady St. bridge down to the lake. The apartment managers name is Jeff, cool guy, he hangs out at Zaffiro's which has the best pizza. The entrance to the complex has a wall that has roses on top during the summer. The complex has a courtyard that is always blooming w/different flowers during the summer & he puts a christmas tree up during the holiday. When I moved out of there, the rent was I think $750, but that was 5 years ago, I'm sure it went up. Heat was included (radiator heat), hardwood floors, LOTS of closets. The only downside is it has no balcony. But I LOVED living there. It's an older building, I think it was built during the 40's & it has a lot of charm. But, there's also a nice area that is a little closer to downtown, just a few blocks away, around say Brady north to like Kilbourn, & from say Cass to Van Buren, nice area. An older crowd there, out of college & professional. I'm an east side girl, I love that area so I'll always encourage people to live in that area. Hope that helps!

That address was 1712, not 1729.

I was just teasing you You should be fine walking home at night in that area as long as you stick to the main roads.

Car break ins are really the big concern on the lower east side, I've lived on the east side for years and don't recall any mugging story. Safety shouldn't be a concern here. The east side has tons of houses as well as apartment complexes, personally I love the charm of a house, and with these you'll get mainly small time owners (whom I also prefer, more of a personal relationship). In the apartment complexes (which line prospect ave) I'd say the owners are a horse a piece, just look for the best package. All in all after living in the Brady area for a bit I came to see it as more of an area to go hang out than one I'd want to live in.
If you want another option I'd strongly consider Bay View, a little bit more a community feel, calmer, no concerns of safety, but still plenty of independent stores, bars, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Only 5-10 minutes south of downtown.

THE BOLD= NO THIS ISNT CHICAGOLAND where many suburbs like evanston can easily be its own city, the only place i can think of is shorewood because its pretty urban(on the east side near brady etc but you still would have to cross in mke which would feel no different.
