What do you know about Bayview and the eastern neighborhoods near the lake?

Milwaukee is gross. It has a kit of factorys and it's just grimy and gritty. There is a lot of crime and gangs. It reminds me of St.Louis. I hope you're not thinking of moving there. IF you have to locate to Milwaukee, consider Brookfield, it's a nice city.

I hear Bayview and by the lake like Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, are pretty nice areas. The houses are expensive, but it is a very safe, family centered area, it could stand to be more diverse. Nice place to live. I hear Bayview is ok, I think it is mostly older people, nothing wrong with that though.

Ministers, Bayview is a recently developing area for young people in Milwaukee who have fled the North side for the next new area to live. Lower costs than the North side. It's a mix of people of a wide variety of ages. It isn't as developed as say the "East Side" but it is developing.
The East Side is a mix of all types of people. The further out you go on the North Shore, the less diverse it gets. All of those areas mentioned are "good" areas for anyone to live.

steffanyhapp> I have to imagine that was sarcasm. Milwaukee is a great city.. Brookfield is a strip mall.
pirate> I know many young people moving down to bayview right now as it is more affordable and on the rise. Though to me I live in Easttown and think it is a great great neighborhood with parks, the lake, nightlife, and well fun. I'd definitely look at the Eastside as well as it is one fun and vibrant neighborhood.

Everyone has pretty much covered it but I thought I'd add another perspective. I currently go to college in Whitewater but grew up right by Miller Park and loved it. Never had problems with crime. It's just as easy to get downtown as it is to get to the suburbs. The city itself is nice to look at, especially when driving or walking near Lake Michigan. There is the ever-famous Art Museum, the Milwaukee Public Museum/IMAX theater, both of which are great. If you're into music there's Summerfest and the Rave, which receives a steady diet of popular and underground performers (can't leave out the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra either). The many festivals are great in the summer and are a major activity for people not only in WI, but from many places around the country. The sports teams are always fun to watch too. As for the suburbs, there are tons of places to shop, go to parks (which I loved as a kid), and the schools are very good. They really blend into the Milwaukee atmosphere, which is why many people associate them with the city itself. Wherever I decide to live when I finish school, I'll make sure it's close to Milwaukee.

What's your intention?
I am interested by this post because it would seem that to ask such a broad question (What's milwaukee like) one would not be very serious about learning about a city. As others have stated, Milwaukee has it's ups and downs like any city. There are some beautiful places and some ugly places, some wonderful restaurants and cultural locales and some hole in the wall places. I don't think we could give you an accurate description over a message board. But we could give you some suggestions of places to visit or things to do.

It's a 'Great Place on a Great Lake!' (Sorry...that's the city's slogan. LOL!)
If you are at all concerned about schools or crime, stick to the western or northern suburbs, if you can. That's not to say Milwaukee is at all bad but the burbs is where you'll find great (highly-ranked) schools and no violent crime. My husband works downtown in the Third Ward and enjoys the area.

Milwaukee's a pretty nice place to live actually.
Every city in America has its "bad" neighborhoods
There are pockets of urban decay all over north and south Milwaukee, but for the most part, these areas are not dangerous at all. Most of the crimes in Milwaukee keep occuring on the same three city blocks. Milwaukee has alot of urban renewal projects underway, both downtown and in their old historic neighborhoods. Alot of gentrification along areas of the dreaded "north side" have made it..well..not so scary anymore. Overall, the new police cheif (from the Boston area) of Milwaukee is doing a fine job of cracking down on illegal guns and gangs.
Also there are some nice areas in the north suburbs and just west of Milwaukee. As of this post, they are building alot of condos and apartments near Brewers Hill and along the Riverwalk. Milwaukee is growing in a positive way.

Milwaukee is not a good place to live if you are black,in fact,it is often considered the worst place to be black.
blackagendareport.com - 2008's Ten Worst Places to be Black
Since it is so segragated, whites tend to have a ''see no evil'' mentality about the city, completely ignoring the intense poverty, crime and joblessness in the cities minority communities as they party on water street. Its disgusting, but this is what happens when evil people come to power.
