gmw83 is on a distinguished road
Default Milwaukee suburbs to the west

Hello, my fiance and I are looking to buy our first house in the next year and we are trying to get a feel for the area. He will be working in Waukesha and I will be working in West Allis, so they cities we've zeroed in on are New Berlin, Brookfield, Wauwatosa, and Waukesha. We're looking for a home between 200K and 250K (although closer to 200K is preferred). Anybody have any opinions on these cities? We would like an area that is close to both jobs (less than 30 minute drive), has good schools, friendly neighbors, and shopping (grocery store, fast food, Target, etc) relatively close by.

I'd go with Tosa or Brookfield. Wauwatosa is just to the north of West Allis and Brookfield is pretty much the midpoint between Waukesha and West Allis. Both cities offer good access to shopping (Mayfair, Brookfield Square). I would imagine that homes in Brookfield would be more expensive, but don't quote me on that. Commuting shouldn't be a problem any place you choose to live.

Both are nice. Wauwatosa's environment is more urban, with sidewalks and street lights in most areas. Brookfield is more suburban, fewer streetlights and few sidewalks. You probably already know this. For communities close to West Allis and Waukesha, these two would be my top picks also.

Property taxes on identical property (tax purposes) are less in Brookfield.
