Default interracial marriage???

I am relocating from California - I'm black & my husband is white. How will we be received in Milwaukee (besides the typical staring)?? Are there many other interracial couples out there? I appreciate anyones help who knows.

I doubt anybody would be staring at you here. There are many mixed couples here, usually white females with Black males though, so in that regard you're a little different. I always thought Black women were repulsed by white guys except for Justin Timberlake and Brad Pitt. Shows what I know. If you have kids I would look on Southwest Side of Milwaukee near Alverno College and Hamilton High School because it is the most diverse and racially harmonious part of town. If you're childless then go with the areas bordering Downtown like Riverwest, Brewer's Hill, and the East Side as they tend to be very liberal just not kid friendly.

Actually in Milwaukee you won't get a lot of starring this is the north and this is Milwaukee where its 40% white 40% Black and its 2009. Maybe in a small town outside of Milwaukee you might feel uncomfortable but in Milwaukee area you shouldn't have any problems. Welcome!!!

No we are not repulsed. You just have to find the ones that are open minded.

I would disagree with this statement-

I grew up in Shorewood, lived on the East Side and now in Riverwest( 20 years in Riverwest). I don't know where the PP is getting their info, but, Riverwest, Brewer's Hill, East Side, Third Ward, and Bay View are very kid friendly and more diverse then any other areas in the City. In all of my years living in Milwaukee- born and bred- I have never heard it said the Southwest side is the most diverse OR racially harmonious area of Milwaukee. I have heard it said ( or seen it written) of all the areas I listed...
You should look at some of the other threads about moving to Milwaukee. There is a lot of good information out there....

Do you know where you will be working? Are you coming from a city or suburb?

Oh my god, NO you will have no problems here. I've never EVER heard anyone say anything about interracial couples, I guess we could care less (in a good way of course). No, you'll love it here, just get out & meet people & you'll do great, no worries.

I plan to attend the University Of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and will look for a part time job once I am there. I am coming from the inner city of San Diego, near Hillcrest.

According to School Matters the 2006 demographics of Hamilton High School were
29.9% Black
34.6% White
22.8% Hispanic
11.0% Asian

Riverside High School
58.4% Black
15.8% White
17.2% Hispanic
07.6% Asian

Riverside is fairly diverse when compared to Shorewood High School (mostly White) or Bay View High School (mostly Black), but schools like Hamilton and Pulaski on the Southside are much more diverse.

To be blunt winters are brutal, but spring and summer totally make up for it. I've heard people from Florida remark how beautifully green and lush Wisconsin is in the summer months. Spring comes late here, around mid to late April. It starts feeling like summer in late May and gets cold again around late October or early November. It's not as bad as people make it out to be, but coming from SD you may be in for the shock of a lifetime.
