Kind of bumping this old thread, but the freeways are the responsibility of the County not the City.

Replacement costs are small compared to the annual energy costs. IMHO, the number of lights in place is overkill.

Are you saying we have too many lights on our freeways or city streets? compared to other big cities we are extremely dark.

I realize that there are older drivers that may have problems driving after sunset but everyone has headlights and tailights. I can easily navigate an interstate highway that has no lights at all. I see no problems with having darker streets at night even from the perspective of safety.

I pay taxes for this service. A couple of years ago some college buddies of mine noticed the same thing and there from out of town, so we did a little experiment. We drove the whole Milwaukee area freeway system and we found over 50% of the lights were out and the same was true for sections in Waukesha, Washington counties as well. City streets aren't as bad but just look around next time your driving on the freeway. I think we need more lights and maybe with new technology we probably could upgrade to brighter lights and lights that maybe better for the environment as well. Walker's Point has to be one of the darkest sections of the city with the tall warehouses and buildings the street lights don't do much. Try to complain to the city and the say " were working on it sir". Bunch of BS but if Chicago's freeways are always lit why cant we do the same? Just drive the Hoan Bridge, it seems like every other night the whole bridge is out!!!
What do you think?

Why don't you direct this question to the city or state or whoever is in charge of street lighting. You have alot of time on your hands it seems.

I don't really think it is 50% either.

Absolutely it's not. This was a strange experiment by this Milwaukee City character, and also one of the silliest comparisons to Chicago I've seen. I say we all chip in and buy Milwaukee City a one way ticket to Chicago and pay his first two months rent while he finds a great job and an affordable place to live.

DONE! I did this about a year ago and I actually got a response and a reason for "most" of the freeway lights being out. The reason the state dept. of transportation was budget cuts from the governor. They explained to me in a tele-conference that with the budget cuts from the Governor they can only replace 50-75 lights a year and they said they are years behind the light repair.
So take your holier than thou somewhere else.

Again - the freeway lights are not the responsibility of the City of Milwaukee.
