Well, the post by FreeSpirit is clearly a flame-bait troll, but it's so poorly crafted I felt compelled to respond....

Interesting observation; you're totally right. A $400k home would carry around $2300 property taxes in my area in Phoenix. The schools in that area are actually pretty good. Plop that home onto somewhere on the East Side of Milwaukee, same price, same lot, similar size, rotten MPS school system, and the taxes are $9k. Shorewood? $10k plus.

I don't see where the $7500 difference is.

Yep. And lets be honest...those folks paying the $9K in the East Side of Milwaukee (who obviously for the most part can afford it - but that doesn't mean they should just have to grab the ankles and shell it out) - if they do have school aged kids, 90% of them (if not more) are paying to send their kids to private schools in addition to getting hammered on the property taxes.

Your hands-on illustration of the $400K home in Phoenix paying $2300 in property taxes should be SUCH A FREAKING SLAP OF REALITY to folks here. Seriously. I don't care how "rich" you are...$9K to $2300 in property taxes annually...I don't care who you are or where you are, that additional $6500 or so annually is a big deal.

The difference is that Phoenix is obviously part of the sexy sunbelt and MKE isn't in that region by a longshot, so we should be doing everything possible up here we can to attract folks. Killing 'em with the property taxes doesn't exactly lure folks.

I love this area. It is my birthplace, my longtime home, and my current home. I want it to succeed mightily. I am glad that the 'burbs here have good schools, I really am. But darnit all, our property taxes (and the like) are extremely high, and we'd better be delivering stellar schools for what the price tag is calling for. And MPS doesn't even come close to sniffing the justification of the price tag.

Milwaukee does need to do something. You have a point about the sunbelt. Alot of people would rather pay high property taxes in the sunbelt than the Midwest. Actually, right now, alot of people would rather live in warmer climates. That is part of why so many people move to places like Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Las Vegas, etc. Immigrants used to go to NYC and Chicago among many places. Now immigrants go from NYC to Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, etc. Even if people find jobs in Milwaukee, the climate can be considered a drawback. Few people want to shovel snow. Children might like playing in it, but few adults actually like shoveling snow. What Milwaukee needs is to make itself attractive to the rest of America. For starters, for new residents buying a house in Milwaukee, no property taxes for the first year of residency(provided they pay for the house in full) and lower the property taxes. That and strengthen the economy. Bring businesses in. This is what should happen. Have a one year hold on property taxes for a year for businesses moving in. Have a plan for the future. Get people to come(to get things going) and they pay a little later(for certain municipal benefits). Futher more, get a plan to balance the budget.

AGREED!!! You'll notice Texas has the best business climate for what the last 20'something yrs in a row now. You want jobs and people to come to Milwaukee make business a priority rather than a tax bank. IE gas tax, min mark-up on gas. People don't like our climate but if we had a ton of high paying jobs they would follow their jobs IE USBC!!! rich people tend to donate a lot of money so it would help out our arts scene and wealthy people also tend to care about their schools and who gets elected and usually hold their politicians to a higher standard than people who say "ah to hell with it their all crooks anyways". There is so much more to say I just don't have 3 hrs.

Not only that, give the people who live in Milwaukee incentives to start businesses. Milwaukee is next to Lake Michigan. Why not take advantage of that. Wind comes off of Lake Michigan. Wind turbines can be used to generate energy. The route to a more economically sound Milwaukee can start at home and then branch out. Give people from the outside incentives to move to MKE and give the people of MKE incentives to start their own businesses and create jobs.

Please no wind turbines, those things are so ugly. I was looking at some houses in Washington county last summer before they put up those wind turbines and now you can take Washington county off my list of future hometowns. Yes I know NIMBY not in my backyard.

How are they ugly? Who says they will be in someone's yard? You can put a wind farm near the shore. You could put up structures that look like lighthouses and put the turbines there. Lighthouses can blend in. Which looks better on the shore? A wind turbine or an oil derrick?
