Default Best buildings to live in within walking distance to Amtrak

Hey all!

My wife and I are moving from Chicago to Milwaukee in May/June this year. She will be working in downtown MKE and I'm still going to be working in Chicago so I need to live near the Amtrak.

Does anyone have any insights as to where the best places to live that are within walking distance to the Amtrak? Any buildings to avoid, management companies to watchout for etc...

Let us know, thanks!!

If you are like me...

... then anywhere within the Third Ward, and some places within the Fifth Ward are 'walking distance' from Amtrak. If you could catch a ride with your wife on the really cold days, you'd be fine.

Also, some of downtown Milwaukee would be an acceptable walk.

I've walked it many times from the third ward, and the Fifth Ward is about the same distance.

If you have a bit of money to spend, there are newer places in all areas that are very nice. There are plenty of lofts in the Third and Fifth wards, the Third Ward being the slightly more 'upscale' of the two. But the 5th is coming along well.

Downtown also has some nice lofts and apartments. In short, you've got plenty of options. I'd personally go for the riverside places in the 3rd and 5th wards. They are new, have all the amenities, and... of course, now is a good time to buy. Or rent.

Please note, I'm good on my own two feet, meaning, I am OK walking 6-8 blocks to get somewhere a couple of times per day. If you consider a long walk 1 or 2 blocks, don't listen to me. Feel free to post again if you locate some potential locations. I'd recommend looking around in person and trying the walk to gauge the distance, once you have some places in mind.

Anywhere in the Third Ward will do as well as the north end of Walker's Point aka Fifth Ward. The Boston Lofts are close and in downtown milwaukee. I used to have a friend who lived there and it was a very nice place.

A bicycle could greatly expand the area one would consider "close" to the Amtrak. I ride every day, including in the winter, and Milwaukee is a great city for riding. The auto traffic is pretty mellow and many streets have lanes painted on the street.

You'll enjoy your time in Milwaukee, but the Amtrak can be quite expensive for a daily commute. But it's uber-convenient. I use the Hiawatha line all the time.
