Any good cheap eats downtown?
Hi all,
I'm going to be in Milwaukee for the first time this Friday for 9 days for a convention. I'll be staying at the Hilton next to the convention center and wanted to try some good, inexpensive food; no more then $20 per person. I know that Milwaukee is famous for brats, so that sounds good. I'm open to all types of food. thanks in advance.

a greasy spoon known as George Webb's or Michigan Street diner or TLC soup on Michigan ave. Real Chili in Cathedral Square. Rock Bottom, Major Goolsby. Brady Street there is a ton of places to eat.
Milwaukee Street is a must, in the third ward the wicked hop.

Pizza Shuttle on Farwell!
Probably should stop in at Maders for some German food, but that would be a bit above your $20 max.
I'd pass on George Webb's. Went there once for the Brewers $1 burger special and I still felt ripped off.

For the usual German-style or diner-type food, I go with the choices above. There's also the Dogg Haus on Wisconsin Ave., though it may be open only for lunch.
At Karl Ratzsch, a German restaurant near the hotel, lunches are inexpensive and there are discounts on early bird dinners.
On Milwaukee Ave. near you is Cubanitas, a good Cuban restaurant where you can eat well for $15 or so. If you like the wine bar thing, Indulge--also on Milwaukee Ave.--has glasses and wine flights, and appetizer plates in the $7-12 range.
On Cathedral Square, Elsa's is a popular place for burgers. It gets very crowded on weekend nights, though. On Jefferson Ave. is Singha Thai, a very good and fairly inexpensive place. If you like Ethiopian food, Alem on Wisconsin Ave. is a good bet.

Now this is a local favorite, go to the corner of Wisconsin and Water and look for the hot dog/ brat street vendor by the big Chase Bank Building(southwest corner).
Buy a brat from this street vendor, I don't know his name but damn if it isn't good!!!

If you can get to the Third Ward (just south of downtown, not too bad a walk from the Hilton) for lunch, check out the Milwaukee Public Market--lots of different vendors with various foods for purchase. Aladdin's has good Middle Eastern and Indian dishes (tasty samosas), and the St. Paul Fish Co. has great oysters and fish sandwiches.
Also in the Third Ward (on Buffalo St., at the rear of a multi-unit building) is Jing's, a recently opened Chinese restaurant. They have many of the usual standbys (lemon chicken, won ton soup, etc.), but also have an authentic menu (you have to ask for it). That menu has stuff like Salt and Pepper Squid, Soup Dumplings, etc. Really nice.
Also in the Third Ward, along Water Ave., are Water Buffalo (moderately priced burgers, sandwiches, etc.) and a couple of pizza places.
On one of the streets near the convention center (Old World Third St., I think), there are a couple of Thai restaurants, including Thai Palace. Very good lunches and a lunch buffet (never been there for dinner).

Not the best food around (it's really more of a bar), but it'll do if you're looking for a safe bet. If you (Sonrise) get there before 8:00 (I think that's the cut-off time), you'll avoid paying the $3 just to get in.
And remember: "Control"
