Very good anecdote, and right in line with the findings by Thomas Stanley and William Danko in "The Millionaire Next Door": High net-worth people get where they are by being frugal, not by spending and impressing the Joneses.

DmagnessDO is on a distinguished road
Great story!

Basically, I need to come up from FL to actually see the neighborhoods for myself. Seeing the pictures from my computer and talking to people wont give me the same impression as walking around the streets at night, and driving around the neighborhood will.

Thanks for everyone's help, and if I find a house tomorrow that I am in love with, I will definitely be back here to get the scoop!

Actually, if I were smart I would live near the hospital (considering I'll be practically living in the hospital...)

What do you think of the Jackson Park/Alverno College area?

I think the Jackson Park area is a great area of the city of Milwaukee, but don't really have the credentials to give you an in-depth review.

I think it's a nice part of the city. I have posted on here before how I think that Oklahoma Ave. corridor of the city is one of the more underrated, hidden gems of an area for Milwaukee.

You'd feel safe taking a walk in any of the mentioned areas so far, ...at least I would.

You know what else is a gem? Mitchell Street & also I think it's 17th? The one that has the new big El Rey. I love that area, I always feel like I'm in a different country when I go there.

Historically, I have been quite frugal, and I appreciate the anecdote. There is a lot of truth in that statement.

But comparing the filet mignon North Shore to the double cheeseburger of Cudahy, is too much of a stretch for me to make. For a person who is indifferent to their surroundings and to their neighbors, Cudahy offers more for the money. A lot more. All other things being equal, the North Shore is worth the price of admission. The two areas are hardly comparable.

FWIW.

Agreed, I am as gringo as gringo can be, however (hence my screen name), I am a *huge* fan of El Paso, TX - right on the border - and have spent plenty of my days in EP in the '00s.

When I am in the area you are talking about, if I could move the clouds away and insert the sun, and move the snow away and insert a palm tree or two, I could very well be back in El Paso.

*This* is the area folks should go in this town if they want real, genuine delicious Mexican food.
