Walker's Point or 5th Ward?
Walker's Point has been called The Latin Quarter or The 5th Ward.
If Walker's Point had to be called one thing which name would you give it
5th Ward or Walker's Point

I prefer Walker's Point but sometimes I still refer to it as the fifth ward, I do get different reactions when I say walker's point and then a puzzled look comes over their face then I say the 5th ward...oh okay yeah it's a nice area.
I could go either way really.

This is one of my pet peeves. Walker's Point is so named because in the 1830s George Walker claimed a narrow peninsula of land surrounded by marshland and founded one of the three "Proto-Milwaukee" villages that eventually congealed into the city of Milwaukee.
This peninsula was located where today the First Place on the River stands, on First and Seeboth. Right in the heart of what some people today are calling the "Fifth Ward."
The term Fifth Ward is also historically accurate, since it was indeed the Fifth Ward of the City back when the City was divided into wards. Fair enough. But let's be honest. Real estate developers came up with the term "Fifth Ward" to make the area sounnd more like the genteel "Third Ward" and less like the less genteel (and more predominantly Latino) "Walker's Point," which for some reason is now considered to be centered around 6th/National, not 1st/Seeboth.
I have always called it Walker's Point. "Fifth Ward" is a marketing contrivance people invented to sell high end condos.

Wow I don't think I could have said it any better, I was waiting to see if anyone would bring up the fact about George Walker. The building I live in is 127yrs old just goes to show you how old and historic this area is.

I also prefer "Walker's Point"--it's more distinctive than "Fifth Ward," and gives rise to good spin-off names in the area, such as the bar "Walker's Pint."

I just saw a REALLY really old, historic map of Milwaukee (like, from the days of Solomon Juneau and Byron Kilbourn) and one of the recognizable names denoting geography on the map was actually "Walker's Point"...it is just a very historic area of the city with an equally historic name to boot.

A lot of people don't known this but Milwaukee city deemed Walker's Point to be from 1st on the east to 16th on west National ave on north and Greenfield on the south. However the Walker's Point that we know is actually "Walker's Point Historic District" just like Pullman District in Chicago. However most would agree 15th and Scott is not Walker's Point but technically it is. The neighborhood from 1st street and east is actually called Harbor View but today's standards it's Walker's Point.

Squads of savvy developers and their architects are scouting vacant buildings and lots along South Second Street in Milwaukee's 5th Ward -- an area many consider the city's next hot development zone.
Vacant buildings and parcels in the booming 3rd Ward have become scarce, so residential and commercial developers have jumped westward across the Milwaukee River to the mostly industrial neighborhood along South Second Street.
