Read through the thread...its been discussed...I think most agree it is what it is because of reputation / tradition and overall its overrated.

I have not been there for a few years but Cliffords had a nice fish fry.

Lakefront Brewery is great for the atmosphere and the fish fry is ok. I like that it has other meatless entrees such as spinach tortellini salad. I was really impressed with the fish fry dinner you can order at Mamma Mia's. Even though it's a pizza restaurant, they make the best fish fry around-at least I enjoyed it and I usually hate fish fries. Gille's also has a decent fish fry platter but don't get it to go or it will take nasty by the time you eat it at home.

I've only been to the one at Lakefront Brewery, but it was such a great experience I can't wait to go back.
Edit: sorry, should explain why. It's the atmosphere, from the $6 tour which is a blast and includes a lot of great beer, to the atmosphere in the hall...communal tables, oompah band, etc. And the fish was really good...not too oily or flaky.

Places like milwaukee and louisville have high german american populations, the fish fry is of german origin so in those cities fish frys are common

Gosh, it's been years since I've been out for fish fry in Milwaukee. What ever happened to Miss Katie's? It was up on top of the Interstate interchange. Used to go there and then to a Buck's game. Great fish fry and the best onion loaf I've ever eaten.
Here in Missouri the only fish you'll find in a "fish fry" is catfish. Not bad but I sure do miss Lake Perch.

I grew up in St. Louis, ...lots of Germans, lots of Catholics, but not many Fish Fry's outside of lenten season. When that time of year comes, it's Fish Fry's all over the place, and poof, then they disappear until next year. It wasn't until time spent living in WI and time spent throughout the state that I experienced the WI version.
I'm not a big Fish Fry person, but I've had more than my share. Big seafood fan though.

Alioto's takes the cake for me. Amazing fish, no rubbery stuff. Generous portions.
