Sorry to say but many of the midwestern kids I have been encountering lately seem to be devoid of any manners and are taught to be mini adults at very young ages. On the flip side I have encountered some very polite and curteous youngsters who have huge smiles on their faces and a genuine enthusiasm for life. One will encounter many rude self absorbed shoppers in a place like Woodmans, I guarantee it.
To sum up, after I started thinking about it, people aren't necessarily gaga friendly here in Madison.

I just dealt with a "curt" cashier this morning when I went to buy a Heath Bar in the bookstore of my university, and I live in the South. I think it is a matter of attitudes. Just because a place seems to have a slower pace doesn't mean people want to deal with you. And the bookstore I was in was rather empty.

MC, sorry you're having to leave. That's too bad.
For another perspective, I'm a lifelong Texan who moved up here 2 years ago. I was like you-- never thought I could live anywhere it wasn't hot hot hot.
Then, I ended up getting MS. Holy cats! I was used to gardening in 104 degrees and not even feeling it if I drank my water. After my diagnosis, forget it. I was really tired of having to stay indoors ALL the TIME.
I figured, "Hell, if I've got to stay inside 6 months of the year, I'd like for it to be the crappy half."
Moving up here was a revelation. I had never seen 4 seasons before. Not really. Only a vague imitation. The daffodils and tulips in the spring and the wonderful 50-70 degree temperatures were heaven to me.
I love that the city has so much history, and people save it. In Dallas, they tear everything down and build a mall or a parking lot.
I love the Midwestern friendliness. People here are so down to earth. People talk up southern friendliness. They don't mention that oftentimes, people will be really friendly to your face, and then stab you in the back.
And yes, frozen fuel lines suck, and skidding on the road sucks, but seeing my dog's face (all 100 pounds of him) when we go to the park and run in the snow is like nothing else on earth. I'm hoping we can stay, but I'm hoping the economy improves soon. I just got laid off, so we may have to move on too.

I wonder if people in Milwaukee have considered Pittsburgh? Seems like a very similar city to Milwaukee, condensed and neighborhoods and such...and still cold, but at least not AS COLD
I'm also curious how people are feeling now that it is July!

What exactly is to be gained by moving from Milwaukee to Pittsburgh? Someone looking for refuge from Milwaukee winters sure isn't going to find it there.

I moved from Milwaukee to South Florida a year ago and love it so far. I lived downtown so I kind of miss that aspect but other then that its nice down here. The weather is great, real estate is back down a reasonable price, and you can actually get tickets to a football game!
I found it funny when it got down to 40 (at night)for a couple days over winter and they sent out alerts to bring your pets/plants over night. Other than that its been great. Don't miss shoveling snow a bit

I've lived in Milwaukee all of my life. I have to say that I don't like it. The winters last too long. You can't count on having a real summer here. Summer starts mid-June and tends to end abruptly in August.
If you like to have things to do, well winters shutdown Wisconsin. Wisconsin will pack everything into their summer. People start to hybernate during the fall and winter, which is most of the year.
Unfortunately, Wisconsin has stopped salting the roads the way they used to when I was a kid. They don't salt the side streets. They also won't plow the side streets unless you get 2-3 inches of snow. If you park on the street, it' a problem getting out to work or anywhere else. Your social life pretty much ends.
Also, the job opportunities here are not good at all. We have a very high unemployment rate, which is so much worse if you are a minority. For example, one out of every two African American males are unemployed in Milwaukee. This is one of the worse...if not the worse in the nation. This also contributes to high crime in the area.
We have one major mall, which is Mayfair. It's always crowded and parking is terrible. You could go downtown, but downtown is not all that lively, especially in the fall and winter. There is Brookfield mall and the Southridge mall, but they don't offer all that Mayfair has. They've rebuilt the Bayshore mall, but it's like a construction nightmare.
I'm moving to Texas as soon as my house sells. I'm so excited. People say that I'm moving from one extreme to another. I just feel like I would prefer to see the sun year around than deal with the cloudy overcast weather that we have here. Also, I've heard that unemployment is high there, but it's nothing compared to Wisconsin. Plus, if any state is set to rebound, it would be Texas.

Summer ends in August? Winter "shuts down" Wisconsin? Are you serious?

So? then don't live on the near north side.
I could pick on Milwaukee for a lot of things but it has a lot going for itself as well. You could walk around all day being upset about something but if you're moving b/c we don't have two major malls and a lot of black people don't have jobs and the weather sucks well cry me a river. Somethings you can change others you cannot, it's called dealing with it. Since when does WI shut down during the winter? not where I live. Maybe in a small town of 20 people but in Milwaukee and Madison I'm sure people still go outside and still go out for dinner and bars. You just sound like a whiner. I want to leave b/c of the weather but all your other reason seem to small to make me move.

They're definitely different aesthetically and topographically and the climates are a bit different. But I think someone raised with Milwaukee's blue-collar values and traditions (even if they're not blue-collar themselves) would probably find a lot of familiarity in Pittsburgh's culture.
