We have only lived in Green Bay a couple of weeks, but our son has his skateboard stolen right out of his hands on our fifth day here so that has soured us on Green Bay. I think crime rate doesn't mean much until it happens to you or someone you love. I understand that Green Bay does have a rising crime rate so we plan to move to a smaller town outside of Green Bay, perhaps Howard or De Pere. When you have children there is so much more to consider in where you live.
We did find a nice church in Green Bay, First Christian Church, not to big and not to small, good youth group and so forth. However, even they are considering putting the building up for sale and building in Howard, as many of the church members live there.

I grew up in a 'safe' small town of 1500 and had my bike stolen, among many other things. Bad stuff happens everywhere. C'mon now, you're going to be soured on Green Bay because of this? This couldv'e happened anywhere. Something like this will happen in Howard or DePere or wherever you go.
Personally, I think a little exposure to the "real world" can teach kids how to handle it, how to avoid certain situations. It will benefit them in the long run more than trying to totally shelter them, because you can't shelter them completely for the rest of their lives.

My son has his bike stolen in the small town too. The difference is, because it was a small town, several people saw one of the town "bad kids" with it and went to my son and told him. Within two hours, we had his bike back.
As far as "exposure to the real world", that is like saying it is okay to teach kids to swim by throwing them in the deep end of the pool and saying swim. (I almost drowned that way and still do not swim to this day.) We take calculated risks to expose our children to the world but deliberately sending them out to an area that is known for crime, is stupid and neglectful as a parent. Green Bay is closest to my husband's new job but we don't plan to live here. I have heard that De Pere has an excellent school district so that is probably where we will go.

Hah. It's amazing to hear raising a family in Green flippin' Bay compared to throwing your kid into the deep end of the pool, as if it were the equivalent of New Orleans or something. Everyone' gotta do their own thing and I appreciate that... but good Lord. Get a grip and maybe a little perspective too.

2. "I've also learned that the population is growing quicker than anticipated due to a large Latin influx. This may sound like a racist remark, but I don't want to move my family to a city where we have to learn another language to survive. I know that remark is a bit extreme, but I'm just concerned."
I'm sorry, but that comment was just plain idiotic. Like every major american city, Milwaukee is experiencing an influx of Hispanic immigrants. Currently, they are 12% of the population, according to the Census, and most of them live in an enclave on the near south side. Again, remember, this is a diverse major American city. There are dozens of different languages of all kinds spoken by many residents, but the main language in all cases in English.
3. Milwaukee has roughly 30 suburbs or so. If you don't want to live in the city, there are other options. Our suburbs are just a boring and bland as any other suburb in America (save for Shorewood, Wauwatos and a few others).
Sorry to sound harsh but you seem to be completely naive when it comes to city living.

Hey, wow thanks for calling me an idiot! Yeah, I'm stupid and don't know much about city living. Just lived in major cities around the US and in Europe, but hey, you didn't know that. And note that I do live in the Twin Cities which is much larger than Milwaukee...which is one of the main reasons I was considering moving there, so I don't have to live in such a big city.
I'm really not going to address the latin comment. Suffice it to say I have my preferences and reasons. And if you don't want to sound harsh, then think before you type.

I responded to your first extreme statement, which was becoming soured about an entire city because of one isolated incident. Now, you've followed up with even more extreme statements. All I can say about the pool thing is, Wow.
There was a Chinese couple who moved to DePere from New York City after 9-11 becaue they wanted to live in a 'safe' city. They opened up a restaraunt there. Then Susan Gong was murdered in her quiet little neighborhood in DePere. This was a year or so ago. Don't let that scare you away, though. Just another isolated incident. I think that was the first murder in DePere in many years.
Actually, DePere is nice and I don't blame you for looking into it. I wouldn't mind living in one of those quaint neighborhoods myself.

then enlighten me. what part of your post should I re-read? See it's hard to read someones post when they've called you an idiot. So share with me where I should re-read and maybe I'll get the point.

The point is it would take someone with the cultural IQ of a suitcase to think you'll "have to learn (spanish) to survive" in Milwaukee, a midwestern city with 2 million people...This is just common sense, regardless of whether you lived in city or in the suburbs. And you said you wanted to live in the suburbs anyway, so why should this even concern you? You should know by now that most american suburbs are lily-white (Milwaukee's no exception). This isn't texas or new mexico, it's Wisconsin for god's sake.
But, when all is said and done, a suburb is a suburb, ain't it? Doesn't really matter where you are, you can get the same suburban flavor from the Twin Cities to Milwaukee to Boston, etc.
