Colgate or Mequon
Which would be a better place to live, Colgate or Mequon? The homes we are considering building is the same price and same distance from work. The kids don't want to move to Mequon because schools would change. But we are confused which would be better place to live and which district has better schools? Germantown schools are not the greatest although they have the top WKCE scores. Are Mequon schools better?

I don't know much about the schools in either area but Colgate is so beautiful-close to Kettle Morraine is a definite plus! Mequon is ok but it is not as scenic.

I think you would find Mequon schools are definitely better.

I didn't realize Colgate was part of Germantown Schools? Some are at Amy Belle? This area is quite confusing when it comes to districting. I am getting tired of the overcrowding and property tax increase issues with Germantown.
You said same distance but have you traveled to each area to and from work at peak travel times? I am 'thinking' getting to Mequon is a bit more congested coming from downtown.

Double check on where Colgate children go to school. I thought Colgate was in the Kettle Morraine district. I could be wrong, though.

Parts of Colgate are in Germantown School district. The area we are considering is in Germantown School district. Currently we live in Germantown, so schools would not change for kids. But we are not sure of Germantown schools. Some say Mequon has better schools and others say they are just as good or bad.
Distance to work to West Bend from Colgate is 18 mins and from West Mequon is 20 mins.

I gather you don't want to live in West Bend or vicinity? I would suggest you check the property tax rates before making any decisions.

My husband works in wauwatosa so Germantown is central for us. Moving to West Mequon or Colgate would be similar distance to work for both of us. Property taxes in both districts are similar. Colgate is more scenic. But it boils down to schools. Are Mequon schools better than Germantown? The kids don't want to loose their friends by moving to Mequon but we are not pleased with Germantown schools. So far two people for Mequon and one for Colgate. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

The majority of Homestead graduates go on to 4-yr. college (it's like 90 some percent) whereas at one time (and maybe this has changed) 60 some percent for Germantown High graduates. The high school has been recently remodeled and compared to Germantown, well there is no comparison. However, in Mequon you are dealing with kids who come from a lot more wealth and can be a problem for the student who is not into that lifestyle (designer clothes, fancy cars, etc.). You should be able to google the two schools and do comparisons. JMO but think your children definitely would get a better education in the Mequon school system. My daughter went all through Germantown and the high school leaves a lot to be desired.
