Caledonia's own school district
Caledonia is attempting to pull out of the awful Racine Unified School District. Over 9,000 petition signatures are needed by July for the wheels to begin moving on this. Does anyone have any thoughts on this happening? I am hoping now that signs are available, more people will become aware of it. My plan is do whatever needed to keep my daughter (now 3) out of Unified, including leaving the state.

Yeah, because clearly there are no other options in the state...

How about maybe just moving a few miles into a better school district?

There are actually other reasons (family) to support the idea of moving out of state. We could move to Franklin, Brookfield, or any other suburb, but then the cost of housing and property taxes go up dramatically. The lower cost of housing and taxes is the big draw for people to live in Caledonia and commute to their Milwaukee jobs.

And now you know why the taxes and cost of housing are lower. You got what you paid for.

Actually, Caledonia taxes & housing costs are not low. Possibly in a few of the subdivisions like Caddy Vista or CrestView. There are only a handful of homes in the $175-300K range in my area (older homes) and the rest are newer equestrian 'estates' ranging from $500k-$2mil (obviously I live in one of the modestly priced older homes).
The problem is we don't get what we pay for. Add the tuition many of us pay to keep our children out of a school district that ranks 1st in expulsions and 10th (out of 10) in academic areas and it's very expensive to live in Caledonia. Love the area and hate the schools.
