Milwaukee is not dangerous not one single bit. Look at L.A, Detroit, Philly, and Baltimore before you say this is bad.

Got news for ya, chief: Milwaukee's crime rate is much higher than L.A.'s and is right on par with Philly's. Detroit's and Baltimore's is worse but that doesn't make Milwaukee a safe city.

Milwaukee's crime rate is on par with Tulsa and Knoxville not Philly nor Bmore or Detroit. Forbes(I know it's a Forbes list) doesn't have Milwaukee in the top 15 of most dangerous cities. Milwaukee was ranked as the 40th most dangerous city this past year.

Interesting list Milwaukee City. Green Bay and Madison have a higher crime rate than New York City. Indianapolis and Minneapolis higher than Milwaukee.
Often perception does not match reality..

OK, first of all, the Forbes link you provided ranks crime for the entire statistical area, not just the city. Even so, "we're not in the top 15!" doesn't exactly strike me as a rallying cry for how safe your city is. Neither is "we don't suck as much as Detroit or Baltimore!" for that matter.

Second, the PDF link you provide also includes non-violent crimes.

Third, the data from WSJ is for all of two years, which is not long enough to determine a trend. If it keeps up, great, but that remains to be seen. Meanwhile, for the previous 10 years, Milwaukee has not been that far behind Philly, certainly not far enough to boast about it. And at any rate, anyone who thinks L.A. is dangerous has absolutely no business claiming Milwaukee is not.

All right, here's the numbers behind the "drivel": For the last 5 years for which data is available, Milwaukee's murder rate has on average been 42% higher, its robbery rate 50% higher, its assault rate 32% higher, and its sexual assault rate 12% higher than LA's. Stretch it out for 10 years and it's not much better for Milwaukee except where assault is concerned; however, assault has been trending downward in LA and upward in Milwaukee.

Is there anything you'd like to add?

Over the past several years, Phillie's murder rate has been higher than Milwaukee's (by a factor of 1.5 or 2), rapes in Phillie have been higher (sometimes by a factor of 1.5, sometimes by a factor of nearly 3), robberies have been higher (though not by a whole lot), and the assault rate has recently been similar (with Milwaukee trending upward). Milwaukee's burglary and theft rates have been a bit higher than Phillie's.

Perhaps Milwaukee's overall crime rate is right on par with Philly's, but details show a somewhat different picture. With regard to murder and rape, Milwaukee is safer than Philly; with regard to robbery and assault, the cities are kind of similar.

And to answer the original question: Yes, Milwaukee is a safe city--for a majority of residents, and in most neighborhoods. But for ~20-30% of the city population, and in ~10-20% of the city terrain, Milwaukee is not a safe city.

The same kind of thing can be said of most cities. Milwaukee may be trending into an even safer city overall, but we'll need some more time to know that for sure.
