Best neighborhoods to live for professional African American population
I will very likely be moving to Milwaukee as a result of a job relocation. I am looking to move into a neighborhoods with a significant population of professional and/or middle class African Americans. It is my preference to live in the city. The image I have in my head is a neighborhood similar to Hyde Park of Chicago or the Central District in Seattle. Please provide names of neighborhoods and zip codes to assist me in my housing search.
Thanks

Washington Highlands are in Wauwatosa and are more white than anything. I would recommend Brewers Hill, Sherman Park near N.55th and Auer.St, Concordia, parts of Midtown, Cold Spring Park near Highland Blvd. maybe even Riverwest even though it's more artsy than yp.

Definitely: Sherman Park, Washington Heights, Rufus King.
Maybe: Brewers Hill and Riverwest. Worth checking out.
Sherman Park: Very nice homes, solid homeownership, tree lined streets and lots of families. Well known as the *the* racially diverse neighborhood in Milwaukee, though other neighborhoods are starting to have that cache also. This is where I live. I'm white, my neighbors are pretty much every color of rainbow, most of them own their own homes and have good jobs. I love the neighborhood. West of Sherman Blvd, South of Capitol, North of Center or so.
Washington Heights: a little more yuppie/granola than Sherman Park, less diverse than Sherman Park but still a welcoming place. I have several African American professional friends and colleagues who live in the Heights and they love the neighborhood. South of North Avenue, East of 60th Street, west of 47th Street, North of Vliet.
Rufus King: pretty much the place to be for Milwaukee's African American business and political class. A predominantly Black neighborhood with near universal homeownership, nice well-kept homes, and quiet streets. Adjacent to some very tough areas. North of Capitol Drive, west of Green Bay Rd., east of about Tuetonia.

Milwaukee Ronnie could you post more info regarding your experience in Sherman Park. I will be moving there in the coming months and would love some first hand knowledge. I hear wonderful things but have not had a chance to fully experience it yet. Thank you.

I had to google those neighborhood names. Oftentimes the names that Google maps gives neighborhoods doesn't quite conform to the reality "on the ground." In other words, I don't think anyone who lives in "Sunset Heights" is aware that they live in a place called "Sunset Heights."
At any rate, the area that comes up on Google Maps as being "Sunset Heights" is one of the most desirable sections of Sherman Park, the neighborhood I live in. These blocks north of Burleigh, South of Keefe, and centered around 51st Blvd have almost universal homeownership, nice, well kept homes and a very diverse population. These blocks have very strong and active block clubs, and neighbors who look out for one another. I can't say enough about this neighborhood. It's urban in every good way.
"Vogel Park" I'm a little less familiar with. This neighborhood is on Milwaukee's Northwest Side, which is far more suburban in feel than Sherman Park and other closer-in neighborhoods. The NW Side is a patchwork, with some wonderful areas and some not so great areas. The number one difference between good and bad on the NW Side of Milwaukee is homeownership and multi-family buildings. Areas in the NW Side where renters dominate are too be avoided. Most of these renter neighborhoods feature large apartment complexes of a 1960s or 1970s vintage that have seen better days. If you live near a concentration of these apartment blocks, your quality of life will not be the best.
On the other hand, the neighborhoods on the NW Side where there are mostly home owners and no apartment blocks are quite nice. For all the cache of Sherman Park and Rufus King as the places to be for Milwaukee's Black professional class, the reality is that most of Milwaukee's Black middle class resides in these quasi-suburban stretches of the NW Side.

That area is just down right beautiful and my wife and I have strongly considered buying in that area. Great recommendation.

UGH! I totally forgot about that place, I saw a very nice home on 13th street and we also considered buying in that area. I wouldn't go past Atkinson.
