Moving to Milwaukee from Chicago, need advice
Hi everyone my name is Brad. I am one of those awful Chicagoans who is moving up to Wisconsin. I will not be bringing my bags stuffed with money though. I was laid off in June and things have gotten tight for us here in Chicago. We have been spending every last dime on living expenses and home repairs and finally decided that we had better move or go into massive debt fast! I luckily found a decent job in Milwaukee for now. We will move up there in early 2010.
This is a great website. It has been totally useful but I still need more information to make a final decision. What are the best suburbs for raising children your area? Schools, low crime, that sort of thing. I need something fairly close to downtown, but not in the city where the taxes are high. We obviously are not looking for upscale at this point. I've heard Wawatosa is decent? By the way I am a huge Packers fan and cannot wait to get up to Lambeau Stadium once we have some extra money again. Looking forward to the move!

Hello and welcome to Wisconsin in advance! have you looked into places like St. Francis? Taxes are still a bit high but lower than the city I heard.

Wauwatosa's schools are really nice, and it has some great neighborhoods. East towne Tosa is least expensive and maybe slightly less safe than further west, but mostly just bikes left out stolen and such. Great bungalows in that neighborhood!
I grew up there, west of the village, and I think you can still have a pretty idyllic childhood there. Funny the higher prices homes are to the west (except the Washington HIghlands on the eastern border) but the high school everyone wants to be in is Tosa East, which generally encompasses the east, south and southwest parts of Tosa

I used to live (1981-1991)just south of State on 70th Street in Tosa and loved the neighboorhood. My entire block and more is now gone because of the flood plain work.

There is a room for rent above a garage I know of, if you don't mind pretty girls tapping at your window at 3am.

The Fonz "jumped the shark" long ago.
For the OP: Wauwatosa is a good place with different styles of neighborhoods, but it would help to know what price range or rent range you're looking at.

How about Oak Creek. A bit farish from downtown, but not too bad.

I don't get to Miolwaukee very much however when I do visit I find the east end and Bay View neighborhoods to be livlier areas of the city. I have no idea abou the property markets in those places. Areas of Wauatosa are nice as others mentioned.
