Start in West Allis or Waukesha.

Hello,

A women's shelter in Milwaukee is a great idea. You might want to contact a small business organization. They can give you suggestions on how to get started. Here's a link Small Business Administration - Wisconsin (http://www.sba.gov/localresources/district/wi/ - broken link).

Also, you may want to research how to write grants. This would help you with funding.

I hope this helps.

Dee

Wauwatosa perhaps. It's a pretty urban suburb. Lot's of businesses and shops out there will bring customers your way. You have city of Milwaukee right next door to you on the east side as well as suburbs towards the west side. While Wauwatosa is pretty safe, an even safer location would be Greenfield which is a bluecollar/working class area where South ridge would steer a lot of customers your way. Lot's of business near and such near South Ridge

You know there are a lot of permits and zoning requirements for shelters, especially the more upscale the suburb. THe best thing would be to learn the ropes at existing shelters and probably take classes in organizing a nonprofit as well...
