Great choice! Sometimes my favorite thing to do is look out my window and thank God I don't live on the other side of the river. That being said, the Nokomis area is kinda cool.

Population Of Minneapolis 2017

Does this mean the city is well on its way to 450,000? What about 500,000?
Yes. Maybe. We do have to basically compensate for
completely wiping out the equivalent of several entire neighborhoods. I'd like to see more fringe neighborhoods get a lot of smaller scale infill and add in walkable destinations. These areas are tilted far too over on the residential side and all of these residents need jobs, food, entertainment, shopping, etc anyway. Give people more reasons to visit these neighborhoods and more people will want to live in them.

We can't (or can we?) squeeze 70k more people into just Downtown, Uptown, and that little triangle of NE. The city should encourage development in those fringe neighborhoods bordering the suburbs and create attractive gateways that highlight the point that Minneapolis is the side you wanna be on and not Richfield, Edina, etc.

I wouldn't say no way. It's only 80k from where the population is at now (growing 40K in the past 6 years) and the population was over 500K before. I say, why not?

I think it's possible but I don't think current growth trends will continue at this surprisingly healthy pace. One thing to remember is that Minneapolis hit 500,000 right before the introduction of interstates. The interstates took a huge amount of land out of the city, in some cases destroying whole neighborhoods. For us to hit 500,000 again the remaining areas would need to be more densely developed. We're seeing tons of dense(r) development all over the city so it's in the realm of possibility.

St. Paul also got interstates taking out neighborhoods. Why do you think St. Paul was able to maintain? St Paul currently is estimated at 304,000 people bring it to within 9,000 of it's leak.

I-94 in Minneapolis was built through the heart of the densest neighborhood in the state. That entire stretch where it runs immediately south of downtown was built out like Stevens Square and Ventura Village. In 1950 there was a census tract at 50,000 people per sq mi which is more than twice as dense as anything in the city now. Most of that tract was bulldozed, with Stevens Square and that one block of LaSalle in Loring Park being the only remnants of it. Nothing in St Paul was remotely as dense as what Minneapolis lost.

Household sizes were much larger back then too, with lots of big families. You need a large net increase in units to have the same number of people.
