Curious, what kind of car is most common (for those who choose to have cars) in the Twin Cities - particularly for a small family (1-2 kids)?...Are SUV's the norm? wagons? Probably tough to generalize..but if you were new to the city, planning to move to, say, SW Minneapolis..and were shopping around for a new car - what would come to mind?

Trying to figure out what would be best to deal with the winters, mainly..but also any other factors that I should be thinking about.

Thanks

SUV's are common and are definitely the safest in the winter, but most families around here drive sedans such as a Ford Fusion. Me personally, I drive an older Lumina. It's heavy and works wonders when there is snow on the ground.

I'm a poor grad school student and currently drive a 2001 Chevy Cavalier...easily the best car I've ever had too.

Most of the SW parents I know seem to spend a lot of time talking about gas mileage; SUVs are still around, but don't seem to be nearly as popular as they were (I know people who have them, and would would like to get rid of them). Southwest is still minivan central, though, although those with one kid, and many with two, still seem to go for the sedans over the minivan, and minivan over SUV. Lots of VWs around here, I've noticed, too. I'm a non-driver and don't know what's best with the snow, so take that for what it's worth, from personal observation (and sitting in on a lot of conversations with SW parents thinking of buying new cars) and not personal experience.

My sister and I share a 2005 Jeep Wrangler. In the winter we put a 7' snowplow on it, and I plow parking lots.
My dad drives a 2007 Toyota Tacoma (short cab, short box). He works in remodeling.
My mom drives a 2010 Toyota Prius.

We live is SW Minneapolis. The Prius is pretty typical here, the pickup not so much. You don't see a lot of fullsize SUVs here, but it's not uncommon for families to have a midsized to small SUV or maybe a hatchback.

I moved here (relocated) from SoCal with a Ford Explorer with REAR wheel drive. I LOVED that car (and it was paid for) but RWD and Minnesota do NOT mix. I'm surprised I made it through my first winter here! I now have a 2007 Toyota Highlander with 4WD...I LOVE this car! It is amazing in snow/ice conditions. I feel VERY safe in it. I also briefly owned a Mazda Tribute (also SUV)...that was o.k. but not nearly as good in cold weather as the Toyota Highlander.

I have a Four Wheel drive Chevrolet Blazer and it works like a champ. Best car I've ever owned (only car I've ever owned). Bought it on 9-11, and it's still rocking today. 1995 with 200,000 miles, leather seats, lumbar, one touch window roll down, tinted windows, 4 wheel drive, digital compass and thermometer, power windows, doors and seats.

Best investment ever

4WD is very nice in some circumstances, but it doesn't do much for you on ice, so make sure you're still careful in the winter.

Too many people seem to think that 4WD means they can drive however they want in the wintertime, and that simply isn't so...
