SInce I live near Wirth Park, I'm partial to the area. And I dislike driving where there are stop lights. So here's a real hiking trip for you, not far from my Bryn Mawr neighborhood. Wirth Park extends from Highway 394 to Golden Valley Road. It includes some high hills, bogs, creeks, birds, flowers, vegetation and other animals. Note that I placed "other animals" last because for some reason the park service has done a marvelous job of making Wirth Park uninviting for what used to be lots of animals. Gone are the geese and deer. The park service has either removed these creatures or somehow poisoned the land to get rid of them. However you will experience the rest of a hiking experience. It's even possible to get lost in these woods! There are hills with 50 to 75 feet of sheer drop. So take a friend with you.

I too live next to Wirth Park opposite Bryn Mawr and I can vouch for everything Jim Stokes posted sans the lack of animals. They're there, but they tend to shy from the trails it seems. You will very easily forget you're 2 miles from downtown.

French Park too is quite nice, not as backwoods as Wirth, but nice wide grassy paths. No wildlife except for some geese.

Something has definitely changed as far as wildlife goes. We used to encounter deer crossing Glenwood Avenue in the vacinity of the bathouses. They would go there to graze. Haven't seen deer for a long time now.
We did spot a wolverine back in April this year though. And some huge bird flies about those twin sloughs. Fewer birds than usual.
Something really is going on negatively for wildlife.
But there is plenty of green grass and trees. Sort of still life.

nick. I must not be there are the right time, then. Everything in life is right time, right place. What time of day? Wife and I head west on Glenwood later at night. About 9pm. & return at 10pm or later. We used to see deer all the time at that spot.
