Hiking near the twin cities
What kind of nice wooded hiking is there near the twin cities? Or do you have to go way up to Duluth to get near the good hiking?

Many of the state parks have good hiking trails (William O'Brien, Big Woods, etc.). There are also trails along the rivers, Mississippi, St. Croix, etc. Just north of Stillwater is the Boom Site with many trials.

Are you talking about nice hikes within the twin cities, or REALLY nice hikes within 1-2 hours? I can think of several examples of both.
If you are willing to drive a couple hours, the Taylors Falls are (less than 1 hour) or the Red Wing / Frontenac area (2 hours) can provide nice hikes with great views and varied terrain. The north shore has by far the best hikes in the state, but you don't have to drive that far to get very good quality hikes.

For a really nice but short hike, there's Minnehaha Falls park right in the middle of the city.
Living in Duluth, I don't know too much otherwise about that region, but I drove through Interstate State Park, about an hour away on the WI / MN border, taking an alternate route home, and it is absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks for the info! We've been to Minnehaha falls actually. I do mean more of the "state park" type of hiking -- where you can really kind of get away from the city. Looks like you've gotta drive a ways though

yes, if you truly want to get away from it all, then you have to, well, get away from it and drive a bit. However, some of my favorite in-town hikes that really give you the feel of being outside the metro area are:
1. Pike Island near Fort Snelling. Great secluded trails.
2. Afton State Park - only 20 minutes from St. Paul and a great spot
3. Carver Park Reserve - between the towns of Shorewood and Victoria. About 25 minutes from downtown Minneapolis, 15 from Minnetonka.
4. Purgatory Park in Minnetonka. I only know this one because we used to live near it. Neat trail and one of the best local parks in the area, in my opinion. Near Hwy 101 and Hwy 62.

If you are in the Eagan area, we have a fabulous "wilderness" area with both hiking and portaging. You can rent canoes of both portaging and regular purpose. The place is called Lebanon Hills and it is part of the Dakota County parks system. It is beautiful, has a swimming beach for the kids. most importantly, the building is a green building and has plants on the roof. It is so cool. They have a chain of I think 7 lakes you can portage to. It's a chain so to get from lake to lake, you HAVE to portage your canoe. It is so peaceful and quiet. You totally forget you are in the city. It is the most beautiful place in the TC metro area. It's a weekly family favorite of ours to do. We love it. Pack a lunch and spend the whole day there.
Please check it out. I hate to give the secret away. BTW: Fishing is awesome, but remember, you have to hike and canoe to it. Most people feel it is not worth their time. Or...it's too much exercise...or they would rather go to the Mall of America.

Hubby takes the boys fishing. Worms make me throw up. There is more to MN than fishing, though some Minnesotans fail to believe this.
