The east side of Bloomington is pretty sketchy - I would avoid that area. If you want to be really close to the airport, then I would suggest living in Eagan. Burnsville and Savage aren't far away either.
My house (heart of Highland) to the Lindbergh Terminal is an 8 minute drive (really!) From the southern part of Highland it's 5 minutes.

Highland is very close to the airport and very nice, that would be my recommendation unless the OP wanted to live in the suburbs in which case there are many options

I would suggest looking at something south of Bloomington (where the airport is located) like Burnsville, Apple Valley or even east in Eagan. All nice suburbs to live safely and still close to everything within a 10-15 mins drive..

Thanks so much...
I am taking notes
We haven't decide whether we want suburbs or more urban..we are looking for something in the low to mid $100,000.00's..but nice..looking for a budget home..maybe a townhouse..definatley wany a basement (terrified of tornadoes) and at least a back patio(we have a dog and a couple cats)maybe a small yard..three bedroom..2 bath..nothing too fancy..just a humble, nice place, Yah know?
It's just me, My H, our one son , a dog and a couple of cats...so we don't need anything HUGE or showy..I'm trying to get away from all that..simplify
Thanks again..I am getting very excited about our big move that way (looking up "hot dish" and 'potato ball' recipes already...lol)

hmm clearly you have a very different definition of "sketchy" than 90% of the population, but ok.

IMO, your budget is going to be the limiting factor here. If you want 3 bdrms/2 bath and your budget is only $100-150K, I don't think you will find much of anything in Highland or S Mpls. I might be wrong, but if you raise the budget to $170K, you will have more options. Just take a look at www.edinarealty.com and you can draw a boundary, put in your criteria and check it out yourself.

With your lower budget, you will likely have to look at areas that might not be perfect, but I would say there is no place in this area of the metro to be "avoided".

If you want a townhome, you would have to go to the south- Eagan, Apple Valley, etc. Actually, this is probably your best best for a good deal on housing right now. Once one townhome in a complex goes through foreclosure (as has happened a lot the last couple of years), it brings down the value of all the properties in the complex- so this is probably where you will get the most for your money right now. As long as you aren't looking to turn it around and sell it right away, I would recommend townhomes to the south as a good place to start. And, if you want to rent for awhile, there should be plenty of them available for rental.

If you're looking in South Minneapolis you probably wouldn't find much in Nokomis or Longfellow in that price range but you wouldn't have much of a problem finding homes in Phillips and Powderhorn.
