It's the NY of the Midwest (and no I don't consider Illinois part of the Midwest). It's got everything NY has to offer - nightlife, four major pro sports teams, best higher educational system in the country, etc. - minus the massive, bloated population, monumental crime rates, and out-and-out filth.

Monumental crime rates is NYC is a common misconception. It's one of the safest cities in the country.

NYC crime rate: 245.3 (2008)
MPLS: 673.7 (2008)

Just sayin'

Yeah and if we compare pop's that is nothing. I'd rather live in a sewer than in NYC.

There aren't really other 8 mil+ cities to compare it to. Point is: I'd rather walk around Manhattan or Brooklyn at night than some parts of Minneapolis.

The reputation was well-deserved once, but NYC has *really* cleaned up its act.

Oh, I agree. Back in the mid 80's and early 90's it sure wasn't as nice a place as today. But that's all hearsay, I wasn't old enough to remember the crack epidemic.

What? If IL is not part of the Midwest, of which region is it a part? I have seen some posters claiming that parts of PA and NY are not Northeast, and others claiming FL is not part of the South and others saying VA is part of the Northeast, but this is the first time I've ever seen anyone say IL is not part of the Midwest. IL is quintessential Midwest!

It's an island, apparently, surrounded by the Midwest. It's the center of the universe if you ask a Chicagoan...
