Where did the nickname the Mini Apple come from and how long has it been around? Why did people start thinking Minneapolis is like a mini New York City?

Mini from Minne- and Apple from -apolis and as a whole a juxtaposition against the Big Apple.

And Minneapolis is, you know, somewhat smaller than New York!

Minny Apple mean to me, 2nd city Midwest, or Minneapolis is to Chicago to New York City. But honestly, it a happenstance, and means nothing really, just a fun moniker.

Well it apparently took until the late 70's/early 80's to have someone actually put the concept to paper and market it. My recollection was that it was one of the local marketing companies that registered the trade mark. I can actually remember when I first saw a t-shirt of this at Southdale about the same time the poster/maps appeared with a gigantic New York City engulfing the rest of the country.

There actually was a lawsuit pitting two rival claimants of the phrase against each other but I'm not sure how that was ever resolved. Part of the court document reads...

The Minneapple Company is a partnership formed by Joshua
Levenson, Stephen Jones, and Kurt Tausche.[fn1] They developed the
concept of "The Minneapple" as a nickname for the City of
Minneapolis, based on a contrast with "the big apple," New York
City. On August 21, 1980, the partnership applied for and
received registration as a trademark a design consisting of
block letters spelling out "THE MINNEAPPLE." The letters are
followed by a period and rest above a snow-covered apple, the
stem of which rests between the two "P's." The partnership
claimed August 23, 1980, as the date of the first use of the
trademark. The Minneapple Company received its first shipments
of T-shirts bearing the registered

design sometime in August 1980, and made its first sale on
August 25, 1980.
