For some reason the city websites don't have Beggar's Night dates posted.
Don't you have Beggar's Night here?

No one calls it Beggar's Night here. It's just Trick or Treating and done on Halloween, not scheduled for a different day.

Beggar's Night? Who would call it that -- the residents who don't have kids?

No, that's what it's called where I'm from. Also, its never on Halloween, usually its the day before. I've never heard it called just "trick-or-treat". That's a verb, not a noun.

Yeah, after moving back to Iowa as a kid, I found it strange that Des Moines had a separate Beggar's Night. Do you know why Des Moines doesn't actually celebrate Halloween on Halloween?

It's true, up here you'll hear people say "we are going out trick or treating" or "taking the kids out for Halloween."

Another thing about Halloween here is that people don't start going out until it gets dark. I know some communities that have "scheduled" trick or treating do that from like 4-6. If you went to most houses here at 4:00, no one would be ready for you . If you run out of candy, turn your lights off. That is everyone's signal that you don't stop at that house.

I'm pretty sure 'Beggar's Night' is unique to Des Moines, IA. When we moved to the Des Moines area from the Twin Cities, we found the whole 'Beggar's Night' thing to be quite odd. I still think its odd for that matter. Why wouldn't you trick or treat ON Halloween?

It's called "Halloween" to people I know and it was my favorite "holiday" as a kid and I loved it, so I feel like I know what I'm talking about. Trick or treating is done ON Halloween night itself and after dark, otherwise you'll find nobody home from work or ready for you. LITTLE kids can go at dusk, but that's about it.

When I was a kid, the night after Halloween was called "wreck up night". Jack O'Lanterns, toilet paper and eggs were the common missiles. You didn't want to be the Junior High School Vice Principal with a nice house in town that evening...
