My husband might be getting a job in Eden Prairie, and I've been looking at houses a little bit. I'd like to live in the Wayzata school district (based on input from other parents with autistic kids, I think it would be the best fit for our autistic son), but I'm curious about what the commute would be like for my husband. Google maps says his door-to-door for the houses I'm looking at would be between 15-25 minutes, but I've heard that 494 in that area is really bad during rush hour. Can anyone tell me what commute times would really be like?

Which end of Eden Prairie? That can make a big difference. But I'd put it close to 30 minutes if he is closer to Bloomington. Good luck!

494 can be bad but that would mostly be against traffic I'd think.

FYI they're talking about adding a toll lane. It's just in the talk stages but I wanted to mention it.

That part of 494 is not bad at all (compared to the stretch through bloomington and around I35). I make the commute daily. Going to EP in the AM is a breeze. Going home, there is a bottleneck effect at HWY 55...so depending on where in Plymouth you are looking, that would slow him down a little - or he may be able to take side streets (I prefer it, less stressful).

Either way - Plymouth to EP is definitely a doable commute. .

494 east and west is backed up - particularly in the afternoon. I would agree that the mornings might not be bad - but the afternoons are pretty bad. I would add a good 15 to any evening rush hour commute.

The worst part of 494 both directions is from HWY 100 to HWY 77. Going from Plymouth to Eden Prairie would be taking the outer north to south stretch of 494 which from my experience is pretty thick but moves pretty steadily. The 15-25 minute figure sounds about right with travel during rush hour pushing that figure closer to the 25 minute mark.
