This subject has been beaten to death. Minneaoplis is a joke...Be happy your are not living in other midwest cities Like Detroit, Flint, St. Louis or Cleveland because the truth is this, Minneapolis should be proud of their city instead of trying to make it seem like it's crime ridden or the hardcore image that comes with a certain city. I'v lived in Minneapolis for 4years and St.Paul for 3 1/2...The thruth is the only reason your city even has crime is because of out of Towners Like the Detroit Boys , The Chicago Gangs and The L.A. Gangs...natives from Minneapolis are not that bad it's the guys coming from differents states that are committing the majority of the crimes. I'm telling the truth...ask any Minneapolis or St.Paul police officers and they will tell you the same. When I moved to Minnesota in "99" Me and my boys were lost in St.Paul on University and Dale, we got pulled over for no reason by a squad car and one of the cops saw our plates and ask "you guys aren't from Detroit are you?" I was like yeah...and he told us to get out of the car and they searched our car like Hound Dogs. I really didn't think of nothing until I was in the city for 3 months when I started seeing the news of Native Detroiters and Chicagoans being swept up for drug raids and murders and the papers did a story on the Detroit Boys and The Mickey Cobras and the control they held over Minneapolis' drug trade. I even met guys from my hood all in Minnesota for that purpose and I was shocked at the story they told me about how easy it is to make money there...I'm not into the drug dealing but it makes sense why gangs from Detroit would come to Minneapolis...a $10 crack rock in Detroit goes for $20 in Minneapolis. with that said, Minneapolis aint bad , it's the people coming from Detroit, Chicago and Gary that's making it bad.

"Now the Minneapolis Police Department is taking an LA approach to the situation and is trying to contain it to one area, mainly North Minneapolis. It's not so much as to squash the situation as it is to keep it in one spot. It will only get worse."
K-Luv, could you explain on what information you're basing this assessment. If our cops have agreed tacitly or directly to "keep" crime in North Minneapolis as a strategy, i and i assume some northsiders would like to know about that. |

"The obvious" sounds a little unobjective to me, and what specific neighborhoods are you referring to K-luv?

Thank you BreaOC..., its nice to have verifiable relavant info, rather than mere questionable opinions.
I still have many close relatives that still live in and around the Twin Cities. As for me, I moved away from there years ago because of a potential job offer that took me elsewhere. Recently, there was the case of a former Minneapolis police officer that had to shoot an intruder to prevent a mass killing in a big church close to where I now live. She acted bravely, quickly, and without any fear of losing her life, while she found it necessary to kill this intruder with her revolver. The local news made her a hero! I loved hearing about her and what she did! If I had to do it all over again, I would have stayed in good ol' Minnesota! Preferably near the Twin Cities! Originally, I am a native of Minnesota! I was born there, grew up there, went to school there and worked there as an adult. I am more familiar with St. Paul because I spent more time in St. Paul than I did in Minneapolis. I want to claify the reason for my question to K-Luv for clarification and make it clear especially to K-Luv. I was in no way trying to silence your idea and persepctive. In fact, i tend to agree that there has been an agreement, probably an unspoken agreement, to allow North Minneapolis to become the mecca for drug dealers and real bangers. But for every one of us who comes from a place that would allow us to believe such a thing, there are 100 others who would never be able to imagine such an arrangement. So we have to figure out a way to describe what may be "obvious" to us in a way that convinces those less prone to conspiracy theories that such behavior by the police and administrative leadership is possible.
Ok, so we don't have any longitudinal studies that we can rely on. But what are the patterns of behavior that lead us to believe that N. Minneapolis is being sacrificed. Does it take a significantly longer perod of time to get a patrol car to respond to a call? Are vacant and boarded up properties ignored by the inspections departments? I don't know any of these suggestions to be true, but if they were they might be indications that K-Luv's theory has real validity. |

Now, 'troubled' areas in the North are for the most part left alone. There are even a few blocks where cops won't even venture onto. There are many community leaders, activists, and generally concerned citizens who are trying to make a difference, but my understanding is that the city, the police and others with the authority to make any real impact are ignoring them. MPD's response to this is that they do try to make a difference in the communities in North Minneapolis, but they are often met with ridicule and a general lack of distrust. Their solution was to hire more minority officers which might help in gaining a little respect from the communities, but essentially what I get out of this is that a predominately white police force feels uncomfortable in a mostly black neighborhood. A few years ago someone was shot and killed in a random mugging in Uptown. Concerned citizens banded together, held vigils and swore on everything Holy that they would do everything to make sure that this sort of thing did not happen in their neighborhood again. Guess what? The police welcomed Uptown's concern with open arms and do extra patrols and have even deployed a few beat cops. Bt the way, I did not think that you were trying to silence me. I just lost track of this thread as I participate in many of the forums on City-Data. |

Cool, i'm glad there was no sense that i was trying to silence you. and thank you for further delineating the issue. someone living on the north side for twenty odd years told me they called the cops about shots fired, apparently a first tier call and waited 1/2 hour for a response. serious problem for sure.
