Does anybody really know anything about the north end area of stp? I am referring generally to Dale on the west, 35e on the east, larpenteur on the north and south to maryland. I am looking at a move to Saint Paul this august and the area perfectly fits our budget and location requirements. Safety is the main concern. Any information is appreciated. Thank you!

We've lived in north end for just over a year and moved here from out of state. It's one of the lower income areas of the city and there is crime, run-down properties, etc. Crime levels tend to vary block by block around here, and it's a big area.

In general, I'd say the west part of the neighborhood (Dale to Rice) is quieter than the east (Rice to 35E). I don't know much about the area up around Larpenteur. We live on the southern end, off of Atwater. The southern half (below Maryland) is one of the oldest neighborhoods in town.

I think a lot of people who probably warn you away from the north end (along with phalen, west side, etc.). We haven't had any problems here, but I think you'd want to check it out and decide for yourself. Take a look at the crime maps on the city of St. Paul web site.

The location is good, close to downtown, the 35, and Lake Como.

Hope this helps.

A buddy of mine used to live in a house near Arlington high school. The area is pretty blue collar and a little run down, but I wouldn't consider it unsafe there. I kind of miss playing poker at the rowdy blue collar bars along Rice St. If I remember right there are several of them along that stretch.

... and speaking of rowdy blue collar bars along Rice St.

I don't feel unsafe here either, but I guess it's easy to find trouble if you're looking for it.
