Minneapolis and crime.
I have been on this forum many times and I hear about crime in Minneapolis. I am going to say something here: I don't deny that Minneapolis has a crime problem. Every city has crime to a certain extent. I know that crime has increased since the 1980's. I know that gangs have been moving in since that time as well(and they get more attention that the hardworking people who do move to the Twin Cities). With all of that in mind, the crime rate been decrease in the last year: Creating face on West Broadway | Twin Cities Daily Planet | Minneapolis - St. Paul. Furthermore, if I had to pick which cty to live in based on total crime rate between Minneapolis and Atlanta, I would pick Minneapolis. Minnepolis may not be the safest city in the USA, but it is not the worst and things can still be done about it while murder rates haven't gone to Detroit's level.

Well, at least you decided to post something. I was thinking about having this thread closed, but today I decided against it.
Crime is an issue in MPLS, but not an issue that can't be solved. Things can be done.

When I first moved to Minneapolis I thought that the gang problem was a joke. This was back in 1997. But, the last two years I was in Minneapolis (2006-2007) there seemed to me a major turn around with the gangs. The two most notable being the amount of Southern Californian Mexican gangs moving in and the amount of 11 and 12 year olds that are joining/forming gangs. Crime within the city has obviously risen (not necessarily all gang related) but I believe that Minneapolis is still in a position to curb it before it gets really out of hand.

Agreed. Gangs are a major problem.

There's a lot of crime and violent crime in Minneapolis. Generally, it's gang or drug related, or by someone the person already knows. If you're not into that kind of thing, you're generally ok. Generally.
Personally, I think the crime is ridiculous and I'm looking to get out of Minnesota altogether.

In that case, Atlanta wouldn't be your cup of tea either. I know MPLs is dealing with unusually high violent crime problems, but coming from an Atlanta perspective, MPLS is safer IMHO. Atlanta is very violent and crime is very widespread. Many of the Atlanta suburbs are having crime problems themselves. MPLS is not by any means the safest major city in USA, but MPLS isn't the scariest place either. Atlanta isn't the scaries either, but Atlanta is scarier than MPLS in terms of crime. If fact alot of the Sun belt cities are more violent than MPLS.

Yes, I would agree that Minneapolis is safer than Atlanta. Getting out of Minnesota is more about the noise and busyness of the big cities. I'm more rural at heart, so that's what I'll be looking for when I move.
Minneapolis IS a great place to live though. No matter what you want to do, you can do it here. It's a great place to work for a major corporation or start your own business. It's a GREAT place for the arts or anything else you might be into. People are pretty accepting and tolerant for a big city.
If you're coming from Atlanta, you'll really like Minneapolis.

I have never seen Garrison Keillor or heard any of his shows, but I would like to see at least one. Art sounds lovely to me anyway. I keep forgetting what that sculpture with the spoon and cherry is called. I do like fishing, and I might want to give picking wild rice a try. I made MN wild rice soup(in GA of all places). I love it and I look forward to trying it.I do enjoy some MPLS institutions: General Mills cereal(Chex and Wheaties are my favorites), Target( I prefer Target over Wal-Mart anyday).
I know MPLS has crime problems, but I don't like it when people vilify MPLS or try to make it look like Detroit. For one, MPLS has a much better economy. Minneapolis IMO has alot of things I would be hardpressed to find in other cities and I don't want to be driven away by any shortcomings whether it be crime or racial tensions.
As far as murder goes, I am noticing marked fewer murders this year, than last year, but it is still march.

You would have to go up to Red Lake or the like to pick Wild Rice; and even then at the right time of year. Watch out for the s*** they grow not in California.
The scultpure is the Spoonbridge and Cherry (Sculpture Garden; 1750 Hennepin at Groveland, next to the Walker).
Garrison Keillor does his shows from the Fitzgerald Theater in downtown Saint Paul.
As you can get Wild Rice Soup very wrong, I suggest going to the Oak Grill on the top floor of Dayton's (Macy's) for it. It's been there for 60 years and any Minneapolitan remembers going there at some time or another.
