Yes, that's also a good suggestion. No electricity and the only running water is a single spigot out on the main road, so you'll get to rough it properly. Only downside is that the camping spots tend to be all together in one area, rather than isolated from one another, but when I was there there were only 2 campsites being used, so it was still plenty quiet.

Many miles of hiking along the Mississippi bluffs, though. Now that I'm thinking about it, I want to go back!

How about the Boundary Waters Canoe Area? Try up the Sawbill Trail somewhere. That's about as remove as you can get. Not as much hiking maybe but definitely has the other stuff you mention.

How far of a drive is BWCA from MSP? I always considered it a long drive from over in the west central part of the state, but I suppose its a lot faster since there is an interstate if you are coming from the south?

From what I recall you're looking at 3 hours from MSP to Duluth, and another 2 hours to BWCA.

Bing Maps says it's 3 hours and 46 minutes (237 miles) to Tofte and from there you've got another 20-30 miles up dirt road if you are going to Sawbill.

Another option might be to go a bit further and head over to Eagle Mountain and climb all 2,301 feet to Minnesota's highest point.
