At the end of August I will be moving to Minneapolis and I need some advice on neighborhoods. I'll be working at the corner of Emerson and Broadway, and plan on biking to work. I want to live within a 4 mile (ideally a 3 mile) ride to work. I am 23 and currently live in Chicago. I'd like to live in a neighborhood with nearby nightlife, but nothing yuppie or bro-y. I like neighborhood bars, dive bars, and bars with little dance floors, nothing expensive. I like foreign food, green space, and artists. I'll be living on a fixed income, so I'm shooting for 400 a month maximum on rent (I plan on splittling a 1 bedroom with my boyfriend). Where would be a good place for me?

It sounds like Northeast Minneapolis would be your place. A nice mix of artists, dive bars, neighborhood bars and foreign food--that's NE in a nutshell!
Its also an easy bike ride over to North Mpls, just across the Broadway Bridge.

Also, you could live in the Jordan neighborhood near your work - that way you'll not have to put up with the Broadway bridge traffic, which is pretty annoying this season (as the Lowry and Plymouth bridges are closed for repairs). I live about 4 blocks from Emerson & Broadway, in perhaps the most pleasant place I've ever lived. The neighbors are friendly (and racially/culturally all over the map), the rent is cheap, and life is good! And, in the 8 months I've lived here, I've not seen any crime on my block. Social amenities like clubs & restaurants are only minutes away; downtown, in NE or Uptown/Lyn-Lake.

If you consider a N Mpls apartment, be sure to check out the area, because the quality of life varies tremendously from block to block. If you know what I mean.

I'd definitely recommend Northeast Minneapolis. It's young, lots of bars and a good art scene. It's not too yuppy and I've seen rents that are much more affordable than South Minneapolis.

Is there anywhere in Northeast Minneapolis that I should look at specifically? Do you mean anything East of the river and North of downtown, or are there certain neighborhoods I should check out?

The epicenter of the NE Arts scene is the neighborhood around 13th Ave, from Marshall to Central. I used to live in that area, it's great to be able to walk to a half dozen good restaurants, bars, and galleries right down the street.

BTW - check it out this weekend during Art-A-Whirl!

What is the sea? What is the sky? What is a beautiful day? What is young love, or a puppy licking its owner's hand?

It's Art-a-Whirl! Oh yeah, I've already got a thread on this forum. And I found this link using Google. It's an Internet search engine.
