No pop music allowed on KQRS, 92.5, only the "cool" music. No disco was ever allowed.

The Power Loon, 107.5, out of Brainerd, MN has similar Playlists.

does KQ even play music anymore? every time I tune in it's non-stop blabbing (between the frequent commercials) about the same two topics that were being discussed the month before...at least they got rid of a couple of the more annoying "hosts"

What about Mo-town, funk, disco, etc.? My mom grew up listening to that stuff in Chicago and as a result I grew up loving that stuff too, including Frankie Valli, etc. I've heard Frankie on stations like Lite 103 and Kool 108, but not so much the former.

However, as someone who grew up in the 80's and 90's, I LOVE the "throwback hip-hop and R&B" station on the 105 settings!

It's the only station where I'll hear Floyd, Skynyrd, Queen, etc., so I put up with it. I'd be okay if there were another one though. When I was in Cleveland they had a couple stations like this and one of them played "cooler" music than KQ 92.5. But.....Cleveland IS the quintessential Classic Rock city.

They ONLY play music except for the weekday morning show that is probably one of the longest running around. I like stretch and Terri. Now they have Michelle Tafoya, Mike Gelfand.

107.9 is more likely to have what the original poster is searching for.

KQ does have too many commercials and the wheezing blowhard Tom Barnard.

I tend to go

When I'm alone in the car.
75% 91.1 (MPR)
20% 107.9 (Iheart)
5% 89.3 (the current)

Wife and kids
50% 91.1
25% 101.3 KD
25% 107.9

Yes, I do. It was KTWN-FM 107.9 and 1470 AM. K-TWIN as the station as the station called itself played an easy-listening/beautiful music (elevator music) format in the early 70's, then switched to a Middle-of-the-road (MOR) music format which hyperserved the northern suburbs with: local news, community affairs, civic-engagement, and high school sports.

The late 70's and early 80's (1978-1983), brought Smooth Jazz to K-TWIN AM and FM, resuming a focus back to serving the full Twin Cities, even though the FM frequency has always been and still is a full 100, 000-watt station on a tower north of Andover in Oak Grove.

New call letters and a new soft rock/love songs format came in 1983. It was first called B-108 then changed again to Magic 108; this may have been when new owners took control.

Sometime in the mid 80's, the new owners sold the AM frequency which became KANO-AM 1470 and reverted back to hyper-serving Anoka County and the northern half of Hennepin County. The FM station moved their studio's from Anoka to Burnsville, near I-35W and Burnsville Parkway.

Autumn of 1988 broought the start of the metro area's first full power FM oldies station, KOOL 108 (KQQL-FM, Anoka) focusing on hits from the 50's and 60's. Several ownership changes have ensued along with studio moves to downtown Minneapolis (RBC-Building on Nicollet Mall and 6th street), and now to St. Louis Park, where all the iHeart Media stations for the Twin Cities are.

KQQL 107.9 now plays Classic Hits from the 80's with some 70's and 90's mixed in.

All we need is to hear Stairway To Heaven or Dream On or Dust In The Wind for the 23,418th time!

PS - is the Angry White Man performance art morning show still a thing?

Thats why I have satellite or Pandora.
I was back visiting last summer (grew up there) I tuned to KQ of course. It was the same songs from my teen years for sure. The same songs, on repeat.

Yeah, I guess I need to agree with you on that. I only switch to it every so often. It is the same genre as long ago. They did have a extensive collection and often played the B side of records. But not anymore, not for a very long time.
