I'm moving to North Minneapolis in just under two months. I'm looking for gyms or fitness centers that I can afford on a tight budget. Currently I work out at one of the Chicago park district fitness centers, which generally run $45 for 3 months. Does Minneapolis have park district fitness centers as well? What about the YMCA?

There are YMCA's all over the metro area. This is probably the closest one to where you'll be living.

North Community Branch YMCA
1711 West Broadway Avenue
Minneapolis, MN 55411
Telephone: 612-588-9484

This site isn't a full service Y. It's a youth center more along the lines of a Boys and Girls Club.

The 3 best options in the general area of north for a lower cost gym are:
Minneapolis- Northeast Snap Fitness Center
Robbinsdale Snap Fitness Center
DOCSgym

That makes sense as I remember people from the northside telling me that they would have to go to a gym in Hopkins or Brooklyn Center to play basketball. When I was a member of the YMCA I worked out either downtown or at the one off of Blaisdel near Uptown. Both of those locations wouldn't be that far away.

The Brooklyn Center Community Center is $234 a year, that has an exercise room and a pool. The only downside is it doesn't open until 8am so if you like to work out early you're out of luck.

We were members of Snap and that's only about $15 a month if you have health insurance through one of the participating carriers and go twelve times a month. It's about $35 a month if you don't. That's open 24 hours.

Robbinsdale also has a fitness center, I don't know the cost though.

The North Community YMCA is alright, and went through a remodeling a few years back. If I were looking for a gym that would be my first option. There are also a few boxing gyms in North and Northeast, if you're interested.

why not go to SNAP fitness?

with my health insurance it costs me $15 a month.

Of course i have to go 12 days, but if you can't make it to the gym 12 out of 30 days, then you shouldn't be going to a gym anyway because it's not doing anything for you.

So I average about 15 - 20 trips to the gym a month. So I'm averaging less than a $1 per visit. Cripes, you can't even get unhealthy at that price (cigs, ahem, cigs)
