People are a bit touchy here, must be the heat

I took the original post mostly as a legitimate "is this for real, or are people exaggerating?" question, not as a "what's wrong with you people, you are all full of it" statement. The OPs followup comments seem to indicate the former as well.

Maybe I'm just overly conflict-averse, though...

A bit off-topic, but I've always found the middle-child to be more conflict-prone than conflict-averse. Maybe that's just my family. I'm the oldest and I tend to fit that bill pretty close.

The arts scene is pretty good, no rival to NYC-that's hard, NYC is just so big.
But for it's size MPLS has some good art going on. Thursdays in the arts district you can walk around and see artist's studios. Also, keep up with what is going on at the Minneapolis College of Art and design-thay have a lot of shows, and art is pretty much always hanging up-it's free and no one will really bat an eye at you walking through and looking at some art.

Hope this was helpful

Although I've lived in the TC most of my life, and LOVE this area, People from hear (On C-D) tend to try and make it sound better that it really is, but that doesn't mean its good. Its a FANTASTIC place to live, but people try to make it seem like its flawless (its not).

What are some good urban HS's in the Twin Cities? In my area, I'd say that the urban district is the only district I would say to avoid and even then, you can find kids in that district going to Ivies, service academies and very good public colleges. NY is similar to MN, but NYC schools skew the numbers, as they account for about 40% of the public schools.

I'm assuming you mean public HS's in the central cities, because there are several private urban HS's too (Blake, Minnehaha, & Waldorf in Mpls and Cretin in St paul).

Regarding public HS's, my oldest son is at SW in Mpls and he and his friends really like it. You don't even need to be in the IB program to get a good education--there are lots of honors level classes. South is also good, and I've heard good things about Henry. Washburn previously was a problem plagued school, but has had a substantial turnaround in the past 2 years.

I'm not too familiar with St Paul schools, so I can't comment on them.

Education: People talk about like its the best source of education in the entire world. I like a good education, but why is it that its so blown out of proportion..or is it just the way it is?

Weather: I think i've said this before on this fourm, but why do people stress the weather being so dreadful? (some people). People make it out to be really bad. is it because theres a larger population actually worrying about the cold? Because when i lived in Alamosa, CO...it got really cold, And i hardly ever heard people complain.

Arts: Is the art scene really that good?? I mean people from here make it seem better than in NYC, so it must be pretty good..right??

Scenery: So i always here about the lakes, and the trees...but when i was just there a week ago, how come it is that i could barely see any lakes from streetview?? I thought went i went back to visit my family, i would come accros many lakes while driving. Was i just not in the right place? Also another thing I would like to bring up is how everyone from the TCs say its so "Lush". Is it really?

Downtown Minneapolis: Is downtown that great for shopping? Or is it average?

I'm not sure if minnesotans know that they bring these things up alot (Some minnesotans, def not all), but do you think its just trying to make the city look better, or is it just natural to think about these things while thinking about the cities?

Just some thoughts.
The Education is good in MN for a PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM compared to many other more "popular" states. In larger cities, public school systems suffer greatly so it's almost standard for middle class families to send their kids to private school. Minnesota doesn't really have that same problem, the public schools are much closer to the educational standard that the private schools hold.

Weather: people always btch about the weather no matter where you go. But MN does get cold, trust me. I lived there 23 years and I never got used to -10 degrees for a week at a time.

Arts: I think for the size that minneapolis is it has a good art scene. I wouldn't put it on the level of New York or Chicago, but in relativity it's probably very nice. I think many people in MN don't get out enough to understand the relativity as I still occasionally run across minnesotans who think Minneapolis is about the same size as Chicago or Houston.

Scenery: There are a ton of lakes, and there are few in Minneapolis. I'd say there's many more out in the suburbs. If you head west or southwest right into the immediate suburbs you'll find a ton of lakes. Lake Minnetonka is a massive lake that consumes most of the city there. Minneapolis is urbanized, so you won't see very far in distance and won't spot the lakes unless you find the shore. But if you venture an hour or so north of the cities you will find it is major lake country up there. West and Southwest Minnesota rural areas aren't as lake covered.

Shopping: Minnesota is known for it's shopping. Why do you think they chose to build the mall of america there? Again, relative to it's size, Minneapolis is very well known for having many place to shop. Minnesotans like to go shopping, there's no better way to say it.
