I'm not afraid of coming. It's certain less violent than alot of cities I've been to, like New Orleans.

I'm not sure a lot of people are scared to go to most places in Minneapolis, but the crime rate is still well above pretty much anywhere else in the state.

Plus, crime rates will vary quite a bit within Minneapolis. Rates are up in the at least the following neighborhoods: Whittier, Ventura Village, Stevens Square-Loring Heights, Standish, Seward, Powderhorn Park, Mckinley, Marcy Holmes, Lowry Hill East, Longfellow, King Field, Jordan, Holland, Harrison, Folwell, East Phillips, Downtown West, CARAG.

It is above average compared to everywhere else in the state. Minneapolis is also the largest city in the state, followed by St. Paul.

Ummm, the rate (per person) is pretty much the highest in the state. In 2009 according to FBI statistics: #1 in robbery, #2 in aggravated assault (after Hilltop), #4 in burglarly (after Hilltop, Houston, Hokah), #5 in motor vehicle theft (after Hilltop, St. Paul, Maplewood, Brooklyn Center), #36 in larceny (though I'd guess that's mostly shoplifting so is tied to who has the most commerical per capita).

I'm not sure we should expect that high density areas are required to have higher crime rates.

And, if you want to compare to New Orleans, Minneapolis had a higher rate in all of those categories except for motor vehicle theft. New Orleans does have a much higher murder rate, Minneapolis a much higher forcible rape rate (#1 amongst all U.S. cities with 250,000+ population).

I would still take my chances on Mpls than New Orleans with all of those murders in New Orleans. And I live in the Atlanta area too, and I've been a crime victim, not in Atlanta city, but the suburbs. All of the times I've visited Atlanta alone, I've never been jumped, robbed, or anything. No one has messed with me. Where I live, in Kennesaw, I've been mugged, and 2 bicycles of mine were stolen. At my university, there has been a string of thefts over the past year, mainly laptops. I have had fewer issues inside the city of Atlanta, which is more violent in general. For this reason, I might feel safer in Minneapolis.

You can find trouble anywhere, if you're an idiot. There are things you can do to not become a statistic in big bad Minneapolis - like don't drive into town from your nice safe suburb to pick up hookers and cocaine. We were at a nice restaurant by Riverplace the other night, and witnessed just that scenario played out in front of us.

I think what green_mariner is saying is that the crime isn't the same across the city and is usually based upon lifestyle. You also have different dynamics in Minneapolis versus say Willmar or Marshall. Think about relationships with law enforcement and where those officers live too. Even the aspect of knowing your neighbors is key in terms of community policing. So, there are many factors to consider when comparing.

That is a great point, as it isn't just city residents that contribute to crime in cities. This example could be found in any city.
