The Days Inn on University Ave is cheap and pretty much right on campus. That is probably your best bet. There is also a place called University Inn that is a few blocks away from campus in Dinkytown which is pretty nice and decently priced, but probably won't be nearly as close to where all the orientation stuff will be happening.

I would generally second those thoughts. Note, the Days Inn on campus is convenient and relative to other hotels on campus (Radisson and Holiday Inn on the West Bank) less expensive but not necessarily as inexpensive as other Days Inns (again, because of its convenient location).

University Inn (University of Minnesota Hotels : University Inn MN) is also available and likely relatively less expensive. Not as convenient to main part of campus, probably about a 15 minute walk (or I believe there are bus lines).

Otherwise, have you checked with the University to see if they have any dorms available during the summer? Might not be something they do a lot of or as easily as a standard hotel, but something to consider.

I second that. The Minneapolis International Hostel would be the IDEAL place to stay. It's very cheap (around $30 a night), and it'll probably be a good prelude to your college years at the UofM (with the dormitory style rooms and the shared common spaces). So, I encourage you to check it out.
