I love the look of the houses in my price range in the Como area.

Feedback on schools, shopping, proximity to light rail, commute to downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis, parks, DOG parks, people-watching, etc. welcome.

(I searched but didn't find a thread specific to Como)

Thanks!

P.

I've looked at house listings over there when daydreaming there too. Location looks pretty good as far as proximity to anything I'd want. From looking at the St. Paul PD crime maps, it looked like Como park was kind of the east-west borderline between low crime and higher crime areas (west and east, respectively). I haven't spent any significant time around that area to comment more, though.

I LOVE the Park, but also unsure of the crime potential. Living in Cleveland now, I can probably say that it wouldn't bother me much, unless there was a noticeable level of danger and I wouldn't feel safe walking around the n'hood with wife/kid(s).

Would Hamline/Midway or St. Anthony be better, crimewise?

Thanks for all the feedback.

Here is the link to the 2010 crime maps. Now that I look at it again, the area around Como (grid 27, if I'm looking at it correctly) doesn't seem too bad, so long as you don't go too many grid south or east.

City of St. Paul, MN - Official Website

But again, I haven't spent much time there at all, so don't over-interpret anything I say.

Thanks.

I think Como is further to the left on that map. Very useful link!

I have some friends who rented a house in the Como area for a while and they loved it there. I've been in those neighborhoods and was impressed by the housing stock too. If I was looking to move to St. Paul that would definitely be one of the areas I'd look at.

Como Park (Read: West, North or South of Como Park, not so much East although it's not terrible) is a dusty gem of a neighborhood imo. 75 years ago the trolley ran from Lake Como on the East to Lake Harriett on the West (then later out to Excelsior) & it was a high end lake community. Today it's a bit of a ghost town but you can plainly see that rich people once lived here, much like the Linden Hills area around Harriett. Quality houses here can be found at ridiculous prices. Beautiful old houses, right by the lake/park/amusement park w bus access & access to the U for cheap.

Now the bad...Como Park is your community school but you might end up private at St Bernard's or St Agnes (one or both are closed now I think?), CDH is a viable alternative & maybe you can get into Roseville? Some will say Como Park is a great school, I'm not convinced. Como is also slow in terms of night life. Not a ton to do there.
