I'm working on a homework assignment and I need to come up with a list of political issues that have pitted suburbs against core cities in the Twin Cities. Can anyone help me come up with some prominent issues that have occurred over the past few years that fit this criteria? Here is what I've thought of.

-Fiscal Disparities/tax base sharing program
-Cost of bus transit in outer suburbs and SW suburbs opting out of metro transit
-Southwest light rail
-School choice voucher program (Not too familiar with this but don't we have a choice system that allows parents to enroll their students in other schools of their current school is underperforming?)

Are there any other city-vs-suburb political issues I'm misisng?

Check out Myron Orfield's book "Region" -- it's still relatively recent, and will be an incredibly useful resource for your project.

Minnesota doesn't have "school choice" as far as a "voucher" program but they do have statewide open enrollment. Under this program any student can attend any school in MN as long as the accepting school approves their application. Minneapolis does have another program similar to this that provides busing to the suburbs that is underfire because the lack of performance from the students using the program and the enormous cost of the program.

Hi UU, I actually own Orfield's book and I've read parts of Metropolitics. These are indeed helpful resources.

- Equitable distribution of low income housing/public housing
- Equitable distribution of level 3 sex offenders when released
- Interstate and state trunk highway expansion within the borders of Minneapolis (oversimplification: Mpls loses property taxes while suburbanites get a quicker drive to jobs downtown)

Fear of, and broadly generalized perceptions of, the core city/inner-city areas and their impact on race, class, and political divides (arguably not as pronounced as other large American cities- and the political lines would refer to the 'red' ring around the metropolitan area). Subtley coded language with underlying racial (and/or class) contexts when discussing school performance and crime/safety issues of neighborhood areas (on a macro-level, the popularity/growth of websites like C-D could potentially have been aided by Fair Housing laws enacted to prevent the all-too-commonplace practice of steering/redlining of geographic areas in the real estate industry- e.g. the laws preventing realtors from talking about some of the above issues has potentially moved these discussions into the online realm).

Other issues- sustainability/environmental issues around suburban growth/development (resource drains resulting from sprawl, car dependence, etc.) versus the perceived lower carbon footprint of urban dwellers/development.

Generally speaking- differences in core beliefs/political idealogies and how that plays out in the areas that people choose to call home and/or choose not to call home.
