rob524teach, since there is no residency requirement for St. Paul firefighter you could live anywhere. There are lots of nice areas in the city of St. Paul, you don't have to move to the suburbs if you don't want to. One thing to consider is the commute time your husband will have if there is a major snow storm like the one we just had. A normal commute took almost twice as long. There are several long term freeway projects going on here that are making certain areas a little more congested (you can check the Minnesota Dept of Transportation web site for the specifics). You may just want to rent an apartment until you find a house. I don't know if you were planning on renting a condo or buying, but the market here does not seem to be real good for selling them.
For some reason golfgal likes the suburbs and that's fine. There are lots of trees and green spaces within the city of St. Paul too. ![]() One of the nicer green areas is Como Park Zoo and Conservatory so you could live in Falcon Heights, Roseville or Lauderdale (northern suburbs bordering St. Paul) and take advantage of it. The zoo there is still free and a fun place to take kids. |

The Crocus Hill area is located on a bluff overlooking United Hospital.
The commute time from the hospital is less than five minutes. Crocus Hill has the third highest home prices in the Saint Paul metro area (after North Oaks and Dellwood). Macalester Groveland has many young families and offers the choice of Cretin-Durham Hall High School (Catholic), St. Paul Academy (exclusive private school) and Central High School, which produces an above average amount of National Merit scholars. A desirable suburban area near United Hospital is Mendota Heights. Locations north of Highway 110 are desirable due to much less aircraft noise from the International Airport which is close by. Commute times to United on I-35E from Mendota Heights are usually less than 15 minutes. |
