Perhaps a good deterrent is to put it on the books that group attacks like this are treated as the crime of one is the crime of all. I'm not sure how that would stand constitutionally, but it would help that if any of them are caught, they could charge all of them with the most serious punishment and lock 'em up for a long time.

Maybe one of them will finally get killed while trying to beat/rob somebody soon. It seems like greenway robbery rate dropped a couple years ago right after one of the intended victims stabbed and killed one of the guys trying to beat him up and rob him.

I don't think you get locked up for a long time unless it is murder or rape or perhaps hate/gun crime. Seems like some creative adjective could be concocted to create a new class of crime that carries mandatory sentence.

I'm guessing that if these gangs come across someone who's carrying and uses a concealed weapon, that would be a bigger deterrent than (what prove to be largely empty) threats of jail time.

I am not joking and I am not taking this thread in a different direction. The thread is about gangs attacking innocent citizens, and what the responses to that might be. MN is a concealed carry state. The laws permit concealed carry of firearms for a reason, and it's not for appearances. And George Zimmerman's case is not only different from what's being discussed here, but the outcome hasn't yet been decided, at least not by a court of law.

I survived obviously, but I was walking home from work one night. I went back to my apt. to put my tips up, and took some money with me to buy some beer. I never made it to the gas station I was looking for. Three men(actually, one of them was 16) jumped me and took my money, $10. This didn't happen in any downtown area. This happened in the suburbs, in a supposedly safe suburb for that matter.
