Default Suburb near Maplewood and St. Paul

I'm going to be working in Maplewood and St. Paul, and wanted some thoughts on a suburb relatively close to work. Woodbury seems closest. We're planning on renting for a year or so before buying, so any thoughts on nice rentals would also be helpful. Thanks in advance for your help!

Woodbury will probably be your best choice as getting to both places will be the easiest and there are a lot of rentals in the area. Oakdale would also be an option, again, easy access, lots of rentals.

Not sure if you meant rental homes or apartments. Oakdale and Woodbury were mentioned but there are also a lot of rentals right in Maplewood itself. White Bear Lake is close to Maplewood but not sure if it has a lot of rentals. The Battle Creek area of St. Paul/Maplewood is nice and has quite a few rentals. Woodbury would probably be the nicest but most expensive option.

Maplewood is so large with all sorts of different houses that you'd be hard-pressed to find something you DIDN'T like there.

You really need to define where in Maplewood though. There are some really not so nice areas of Maplewood (closer to St. Paul vs the Woodbury side though). Sorry, but Battle Creek area for rentals is not a good choice unless you don't mind your car windows smashed, tires slashed, type crime on a regular basis...yes, I have lived in that area and yes, we did experience this either personally or neighbors. There wasn't a weekend that didn't go by that something happened in our townhome rental parking lot...

I'll be working off the Roselawn Ave East exit off of 35E, a few exits south of the junction of 35E and route 36. Is this a safe area?

That area is very hit or miss for safe areas to live. Very generally, the closer to 35E the worse it is. I personally would not live in that area and given where you are working, I would look more toward Shoreview, Vadnais Heights, New Brighton for rentals. If you were on the other side of Maplewood by Woodbury then your previous options would be better. White Bear Lake would be another great option, just not as many rentals in that area.

Golfgal is right in steering you towards Shoreview zip code 55126, Vadnais Heights zip code 55127 and White Bear Lake zip code 55110. The two main exits for Vadnais Heights and White Bear Lake off of I-35 E are the County Road E interchange (exit #115) and County Road 96 (exit #117) which are 5 and 7 miles away respectively from the I-35 E and Roselawn Avenue interchange (exit #110) There are a lot of rentals in all three cities with easy access to I-35E. traditional apartments, townhome codominiums, and single family homes are all available for rent.

Shoreview and New Brighton would involve traffic back-ups on west bound I--694 between I-35 E (exit #46) and I-35 W (exit # 41 A and B) on your afternoon commute while I-35 E between Roselawn Avenue and County Road 96 would be much easier towards Vadnais Heights , White Bear Lake and White Bear Township.
