Things are looking up in the local development scene, especially with the construction of new apartment buildings. Here's a map of the current and proposed projects just in downtown Minneapolis. Many, many more are under construction in Uptown, the University and in St. Paul. All in all, about 11,000 new apartments are being built just in the central cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The latest building to break ground is the 36-story Loring Tower Apartments:

Perhaps more significantly, the first Condominium Building in several years will be going up near the Guthrie Theater:

Does anyone know anything about the status of the projects at the West End on the JCT of 394 and 100? I know they are building some new apartments, but what about the office high rises and the parking ramp?

Lots of interesting new projects for Minneapolis! Can't wait to make a visit to check them out.

Thanks for preparing the map. I think it's great that there are lots of units underway and planned for the downtown core.
One proposed project to add would be the conversion of the Nate's Clothing Building into a boutique hotel (first ave at 4th street), though this may still be preliminary.

Why is this more significant than the various apartment buildings that are coming up? It's all based on supply and demand and there has been a well publicized ongoing shortage of apartments in Minneapolis, while the condo market was over-saturated with new construction and converted warehouses before the bust. To me any new development is good and frankly I could care less whether it is for condos or apartments.

I saw this in the Strib today and it looks pretty interesting.

One problem I have with it is that it doesn't seem to incorporate much street-level stuff that would be great to see in a transit area, especially since it seems it will essentially be across the street from the new multi-modal station.

It also seems to lack any coherence with the buildings around it: The Ford Center is a classic, Target Field has a very cool stone look, and many other buildings fairly nearby incorporate similar architecture. Of course, there are plenty of modern structures, but I would have liked it to at least reference the area.

Still, a great addition to the area. The North Loop looks more enticing every day!

I think contemporary buildings in the Warehouse District like Bookmen Stacks are great, they provide nice contrast. Frankly I think a lot of architecture that tries to reference older designs looks bad. I don't think that proposed office tower works at the street level though (which is common among office building, Minneapolis has a lot of office towers that look good from a distance but are terrible as the steet level).
