Default More Dog Parks In St. Paul?

Are you a dog person? And a resident of St. Paul?

Do you think St.Paul should have more dog parks?

We are forming an advocacy group, and if you are willing to pass out a flyer to your dog loving friends, or other dog people you meet around your neighborhood, please email me and I will get you set up.

Dog parks don't magically appear. They come about only with a concerted effort from dog people who are willing to write emails to politicians and attend community meetings when the issue is on the agenda. These are the sorts of activities we are organizing at this point.

If you think more dog parks in St. Paul is a worthy cause, We can use your help.

Default dog park issue: gaining traction

Since my initial post (above), the issue of getting more off-leash "parks for people with dogs" is beginning to reach the public agenda.

The ST. Paul Parks Commission will form a task force to study the issue from a city-wide perspective (December, 2007), with a final report expected in the late spring (2008).

The Mac Groveland district council formed its own task force this past week to study the issue from a neighborhood perspective.

Also, we now have a preliminary, informal list of potential site candidates, which I can share with anyone interested. You can contact me if you would like to learn more.

Are there any certain areas in St. Paul that are being considered for additional dog parks?

For those of you who are interested in more information on what's going on in the dog park front in St. Paul, you could go to "Google Groups" and then search for "St. Paul parks for people with dogs."

Here is the link (hoping it won't be deleted by the moderator):

http://groups.google.com/group/st_paul_ppwd?hl=en (broken link)

We just set this group up, and there's not much going on yet; and you do have to "apply" for membership (I know, I know <G>), but the person who set it up said this is necessary unless we all want to be flooded by junk mail.

But joining the Group will get you connected to our effort.

You could also try a general Google search for "jan carr dog parks" and that should lead you to the Strib site, Pet Central, where the issue has also been discussed (and my email address is included there).

In answer to one of the specific questions above, yes there are some sites on the table -- including one really terrific site candidate with river access that might run as many as 20 acres.

There are other potential sites that are scattered about the neighborhoods.

Update:

Mayor Chris Coleman recently held a series of town hall meetings around the city, and you can hear his response to the issue of more dog parks here:

YouTube - Dog Parks in St. Paul

Given the Mayor's support, the question now is not so much "whether" -- but rather how many, what type, locations, etc.

What happens will depend largely on how many STP citizens we can enlist to support the effort.

If you are a STP resident and want more information or want to get involved, see my last post in this thread.
